As you know, Rising Star Outreach is a great charity that has meant a lot to David in helping the children of the leprosy colonies in India. Last month, these wonderful children celebrated the dedication of their brand new school, the Peery Matriculation School. This fundraiser helps fund the new school library, which as you can see, is still in need of books to fill up the shelves. David Archuleta Fans Create Pathway For Charity In India

A Pathway of Hope near Chennai, India, connects an American Idol pop star with the children of leprosy-affected individuals. David Archuleta’s fans have purchased 150 engraved, granite bricks for a pathway at Rising Star Outreach campus and school, a project to raise up India’s outcast families.

The pathway and other campus buildings were dedicated recently, and Archuleta has told Becky Douglas, the founder of Rising Star Outreach, he will see her soon to walk the walk inspired by his music.

“When I read the stories, it was so touching,” Archuleta said.  “They’re banished from their homes and really misunderstood.  And their families are cast out with them.  It’s sad that there are people out there who are forgotten.”

Douglas, an Atlanta housewife, and now a New York City resident, could not to forget them.  She first went to India in 2001 to visit an orphanage her daughter had supported.  Amber Douglas committed suicide while attending college, after struggling with severe bipolar illness for many years.  Douglas asked that donations be made to the orphanage in lieu of flowers.  She went to India to deliver the thousands of dollars that poured in to honor her daughter’s memory.

When Douglas arrived at the orphanage, she saw it had sufficient support.  But on the streets of India, the sight of the leprosy-affected and their children, whose only means of support was to beg, caused her to turn away in horror.

“I couldn’t sleep,” she said. “Those images.  I thought, ‘Why doesn’t somebody do something?’  “Then I thought, ‘You’re somebody.’”

She founded Rising Star Outreach in a two-bedroom cottage to educate the children who were ostracized from society because of their parents’ disease.  Today, the non-profit agency has 14 acres of land, a school for grades K-12, computer and science labs, a dormitory for volunteers, a library, a Meditation Hall and a Pathway of Hope.

Douglas, now an empty-nester, has reared 10 children – seven biological and three adopted – with her spouse, an international banking attorney.  Three to four times a year, she visits her 180 new children in India for three or four weeks and while in the U.S. spreads the word about her humanitarian efforts.

Douglas said, “From begging in the streets, they are learning that through education they can achieve their dreams.  Truly it is a pathway of hope for a brighter future for some of the most disadvantaged children in the world.”

Archuleta adopted the project after his dentist, Scott McGavin, pledged to take dental care to the families of Rising Star Outreach.  Soon Angels for a Cause (AFAC), an umbrella Web site that raises funds for Archuleta-endorsed charities, featured Rising Star Outreach and Dr. McGavin’s goal to purchase portable dental equipment.  In 2009, McGavin and a team took the equipment and their expertise to the children and adults who had never had dental care.

Other projects followed.  To date, AFAC has raised more than $35,000 to support Rising Star Outreach initiatives, the most recent being The Pathway of Hope.  Established by a fan, Cheryl Wheeler, AFAC was inspired by an old family friend of the Archuleta family, Todd Pennington, who started an Archuleta fan site in 2004, three years before American Idol made the singer an international star.  The site was re-established after AI as www.archuletafanscene.com.

Rising Star Outreach has attracted major corporate sponsors like Marriott and Dell Computer, civic clubs like Rotary Club International  and 200 unpaid volunteers every year who donate to the cause by coming to India and giving time and dollars.  Videos about the project have won an Emmy and Gracey Award.

Padma Venkataraman, daughter of the former president of India and an anti-poverty activist, partners with the Rising Star Outreach to provide micro loans for colony members affected with leprosy.  Instead of families begging on the streets, parents run their businesses while the children go to school.

The children study, learn English, math and become skilled on computers.  On the AFAC Web site, they sing an Archuleta song, Somebody Out There, to thank donors who gave them a new life.  One day, the lowest caste children will rise to high-paying jobs in the businesses of India, Douglas says.

Starting with four housewives and a secretary, Rising Star Outreach has laid a pathway to success for the children and their families.  When asked what her humanitarian organization needs, Douglas quickly replies, “Everything.  We just picked up two colonies in Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, the poorest states in India.”

The Pathway of Hope was launched last year to help raise money to fund a new school on the property of Rising Star Outreach in India. David Archuleta fans from all over the world purchased bricks as part of the fundraiser. What a beautiful testimony from fans worldwide.

Every brick is made from granite (which is inexpensive in India and very durable) and each brick is beautiful – just look at all the colors. Come rain or shine the pathway will be breathtaking. Each brick will be hand engraved!

Trees are being planted along both sides of the pathway which will lead to a larger grove of trees that will shelter a beautiful garden. 125 bricks were sold during this fundraiser (about 100 people bought bricks, several bought more than one).

To purchase a brick, go to the Rising Star OutReach Path of Hope donation page — make sure to put your brick slogan in the dialogue box – two lines, 16 characters maximum.

The Pathway of Hope is under construction! Over 125 inscribed bricks were sold during phase one. We are excited to announce Phase two.

Construction on the pathway was slowed down a bit, as Rising Star Outreach completed building the secondary school and the heavy construction trucks had to cross over the area designated for the pathway.

Several fans have inquired if they can still get a brick.

The bricks are made of Granite and the inscriptions are being sand blasted to last for generations. The pathway will wind through Rising Star’s Beautiful property and will include a Gazebo!

It is not easy to read, it is heartbreaking to say the least but it is reality. Many of us have already donated and are “tapped out” and we ask if a $10.00 donation can really make a difference. Please know that it does, every dollar counts! When we work together, we truly can help our neighbor in need.

Haiti was insanely touching and the most touching thing I have ever been a part of. It was also one of the most frustrating things I have ever experienced. What you see on the news isn’t exactly accurate.

Before we left, we were getting all of our information by watching the news. We saw tons of footage of chaos, dead bodies everywhere and people looting stores and supply areas.

When we arrived, it was not like that at all.

The destruction was beyond belief trust me. Buildings were in pieces and the entire infrastructure of the Country is gone. It seemed very unorganized and no one knew who reported to whom. Even our military who was based at the airport had no clue what they were doing there.

On the news there are pleas for Doctors and Nurses. We brought down 12 Doctors and Nurses on the first plane and an additional 15 on the 2nd. When they got there and went to University Hospital they were turned away, told that they were not needed and were not “Federalized”. Even though there are thousands of people dying each day and thousands waiting in line for medical help at these hospitals, they did not want our medical supplies or help from our Doctors. It was unreal.

When we arrived we camped out at the airport. The next morning Scott Stapp arrived with his own car (he bought one in Dominican Republic and drove himself into Haiti), a large bus and a convoy of cars. He assembled a team of locals who knew where help was needed the most. One of them was a local Minister who was really respected in the community.

Since the hospitals did not take our supplies or Doctors, we decided to go with Stapp and the local team outside of the airport to villages to bring help to these people.

We convoyed to Leogane, where the epicenter was about a 2 1/2 hour drive. It was beyond devastating there. We were the FIRST people to go there and this was 15 days after the earthquake! Not one relief mission, military force, UN group, NGO, etc was there before us and this is where the most devastation was. Everybody was scared to go there and even though we have tons of military troops on the ground and the airport is overflowing with supplies, none of it is getting to these people.

We set up our own mini hospital/ triage unit in a village. People scurried out of bushes and came from everywhere when word spread that finally help was there and we had doctors. It was mind-boggling. They kept lining up. We treated over 600 patients at that location in 6 hours with 2 Doctors, 3 Nurses and 6 volunteers. It was heart breaking. We saw horrible infections and some massive injuries. We ended up evacuating some people and bringing them back with us to the airport to the University of Miami Medical Center tent. Our evacuations included a 6 year old girl with a crushed finger that needed to get amputated, a 6 year old girl with Tetanus ( she ended up dying later that night), a 3 month old girl with a skull fracture, a 12 year old boy with a bad leg infection, etc.. It was like the Apocalypse. We couldn’t believe how many people had such serious injuries and were unattended to for over 2 weeks.

We never felt threatened at all. They were all polite and patient, even though they had no food, clean water and were in pain. They waited in line to see us and were all emotional that we came. Very touching.

We will all never forget the smell. They were burning their garbage, that included plastic and rubber. It was horrific. Masks didn’t help and we all ended up getting sick from inhaling the fumes for 3 days. I am still coughing up black chunks from the smoke.

The system is broken down there and they need LOTS of help. There is no system to distribute any of the relief supplies that were donated and the NGO’s are overwhelmed. The people are desperate and need help NOW. Everything just sits there while people die. The hospitals are overwhelmed and US hospitals who have gone to help such as the University of Miami Medical Center, have great set ups, but run their hospital like it is a normal day in Miami and an HMO controls them. They would shut down to rest or felt too crowded and turn critical patients away (including the 3 month old girl with the skull fracture), even though people were dying across the street and they had tons of nurses and doctors standing around. We started grabbing all these people and bringing them to our tent city and treated them around the clock.

We found it fascinating that even though time is of the essence and people are dying every minute, they all closed at night for new patients. We treated people 24/7. We turned no one away and worked until we were ready to drop dead. The red tape and politics in place there is so messed up. It seriously is like our US insurance companies are running the show. We met several people (filmed them all) who walked 15 miles over 3 days critically injured to get medical treatment, only to be turned away because the staff needed “rest” or they were “over crowded”, even though the staff we spoke to wanted to take them. The head doctor turned them away and then when we grabbed the patients, he tried to stop us because we weren’t “official”. He said they should go home and come back in 1-2 days when it is slower! It was mind boggling.

Why is it that a group of musicians, led by me a DVD producer & director were more effective than our government and major medical companies? In 3 days we treated over 1,000 people, saved at least 100 lives, administered tons of antibiotics, distributed thousands of pounds of food and water, etc.. We became the “Robin Hood” gang of the airport base. After we saw that the supplies were not being distributed and were sitting there for days, including 1000′s of cases of water from the UN and tons of meals from the Indian Army, we took it all and brought it to the people. Never once did they riot or get out of hand. I think the way food is being distributed by the Army and UN is sad. They throw the food at them from the back of a truck. That is why they act like animals. Treat them like animals and people will act that way. Hand them the food like humans and they are all gentle and beautiful people.

We cried everyday and all want to go back now. We want to raise more money and go down immediately (within the next 1-2 weeks). People are dying from wounds as simple as a cut on their leg because no one is even giving them band aids and antibiotics. I can not believe it.

Everybody from The Wheelchair Foundation and Medshare were absolutely amazing. Scott Stapp, his sister Dr Janette Nesheiwat and her brother Daniel Nesheiwat were UNBELIEVABLE. True heroes and really rose to the occasion. It was a trip I will never forget and the first of many down there.

Angels for a Cause is hosting a Silent auction for Dr. Scott McGavin’s personal AFAC sky blue awareness bracelet autographed by David Archuleta!

This auction is to benefit Rising Star Outreach.

Dr McGavin wore this bracelet to India to serve a dental mission to help the children of Rising Star Outreach.

Dr McGavin has worn this bracelet for a several months. During this time he traveled to India to help the needy, and had many visits with David  - including extracting David’s wisdom teeth.

David Archuleta took the time to autograph this special bracelet and it truly is a one of a kind!

David tweeted a couple of months back that he was having his wisdom teeth extracted and used twitpic to post a photo of himself having his teeth pulled. In this photograph you can see Dr. McGavin wearing the bracelet on his left wrist as he is working on David in the dental chair.

Angels for a Cause is holding a special birthday fundraiser to raise money for the Lisa Lopes Foundation. David Archuleta’s 19th birthday is TODAY -December 28th, 2009. What a wonderful way of celebrating David’s birthday by giving to charity!

They have some beautiful David Archuleta collectibles up for auction, including David’s first 19 Entertainment Promo shot / artist promotional card — printed on June 5th, 2008 shortly after he signed his first recording contract with JIVE records. David autographed a limited number of these while he was on the American Idol Tour. DON’T MISS OUT ON THIS!

Rising Star Outreach was the focus charity at a Meet and Greet featuring David Archuleta in down town New York City on Fifth Avenue. Over 200 fans turned out to meet David! The process was well organized and photographs were only allowed from a distance. Thank you to all the fans who went to this event and thank you to Build-A-Bear for holding it. The event was a great success!

Of course there’s the monetary giving. Giving someone a special present can bring a lot of happiness. Donating to charities through such organizations as Angels For a Cause can warm your heart because you’re making a difference in someone else’s life.

Even if you are unable to donate financially right now, there are still many ways to give.

Volunteer in your area. Time is one of the most valuable things you can give. When you volunteer, be sure to tell others about David. Bring along copies of David’s debut album and Christmas From the Heart. Share the gift of David’s music with others!

Consider donating any gently used items that you aren’t using anymore. This is a great way to clean out, gain some space, and help someone at the same time. Many charities, like Goodwill, accept drop off items and will even give you a tax receipt for them. By donating items you can really help those who may be struggling.

On a more personal level, reconnect with family and friends. Take time to really talk with them and listen. Remember to tell them how beautiful Christmas From the Heart is and suggest they add it to their holiday celebrations.

Don’t forget the power of the little things! Say thank you. Give a compliment. Let people know they are appreciated. Hold the door for someone who’s carrying a lot. Tell people how much they mean to you. Smile. Never underestimate the importance of simple things. They often produce a bigger effect than you might think.
