David ArchuletaLast Day in Washington D.C.!

Sadly, this was the last day of our trip. First, I got to have an interview with none other than David Archuleta from American Idol. He was super nice and so cute! I even got to meet his aunt. She was wonderful. I was feeling her ring because I love to feel jewelry. She gave it to me!! I cried! They said that we would keep in touch!! Then, I met Senator Sessions; he was so nice and even gave me a coin with the state capital on it. He even let me hold the National Championship helmet of Alabama’s victory. I even got to meet Mrs. Sessions. After this, we got to visit the White House. We got to tour all around. Of course, we had to go through lots of security but it was worth it. The house was gorgeous. They had different colored rooms!! Then came the most exciting thing of all. We got to meet President Obama himself. I even carried on a conversation with him and he knelt in front of me and shook my hand! Finally, we got to go to the Nationals game. To our surprise, we walked in on a red carpet and got trophies and a backpack full of National things. . . . Go here for the full story and to leave comments.

Children’s Miracle Network Social Media Release – Salt Lake City

Nation’s Most Courageous Children are Coming to Washington, D.C.

Children’s Miracle Network to Bring Children’s Hospital Patients to Washington, D.C. for “Champions Presented by Walmart and Sam’s Club”

Some of the nation’s most courageous children are coming to Washington, D.C. this month. From June 6 to 10, more than 50 children’s hospital patients will be in the nation’s capitol as part of “Champions presented by Walmart and Sam’s Club,” a Children’s Miracle Network program.

The Champions represent the nearly 17 million children treated at Children’s Miracle Network hospitals every year. The program designates a Champion child from every state and Washington, D.C. who has bravely battled a serious injury or illness (there are 55 Champions instead of 51 due to several sibling representatives). The 2010 Champions have dealt with a wide variety of injuries and illnesses including genetic diseases, cancer, heart transplants and traumas, as well as life-threatening staph infections.

“The Champions program puts a face – more than 50 faces, actually – to our cause,” said Scott Burt, president and CEO, Children’s Miracle Network. “This program creates a once-in-a-lifetime memory for our Champions families, as well as connects them to others who understand the unique experience of long-term treatment at a children’s hospital. We hope these Champions inspire others to give us much as possible to Children’s Miracle Network when they have the opportunity, making a difference in the lives of children across the country.”

The Champions’ itinerary includes a tour of Washington, D.C., a luncheon with senators and congressmen, and a tour of the White House where they traditionally meet with the President. Country music artist Mark Wills and 2010 Miss America Caressa Cameron will join the Champions for the week. Additionally, pop star and American Idol runner-up David Archuleta will be in Washington, D.C. with the Champions on Wednesday, June 9 for a number of events.

Chords of Strength

A runner-up on American Idol and successful music artist, David Archuleta was named one of the “breakout stars of 2008″ by Forbes magazine and landed the number two spot on the Billboard charts.

In Chords of Strength David shares his unexpected and inspiring journey, including how he overcame vocal cord paralysis to achieve his dream of being a singer. He reveals insecurities he felt about his voice — before he realized that he loved the way singing made him feel more than he disliked the way he sounded. In this personal memoir, David opens up about the strength he draws from his unshakable faith and unyielding family. He pays tribute to those who continue to inspire him and through their example help him believe in himself, his talent, and his abilities.

Intimate and uplifting, Chords of Strength allows a unique glimpse of the man behind the music and offers hope to anyone with a passion and a dream

Hey everyone! I thought I’d leave a note to let you guys know about what’s been up with me lately. This last weekend was a really great one! I got to spend time with some friends, which included some who drove down from Utah, and we all went to the Santa Monica Pier and rode the ferris wheel haha. We also walked around 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica and had a great time walking around and seeing the street performers. It’s really neat watching a bunch of those street performers. There are some really talented people who are down there performing that you’ll have to check out if you ever go there. We also ate at a restaurant called Buddha’s Belly and had some great ginger fried rice. Good stuff. I had a really fun time hanging with my friends. They rode the segways too but I’m too afraid to ride those lol. I really want to ride a bike sometime! I haven’t had a bike for sooo long, and I’m reaching a point where I’m tired of not riding one. I think I’m going to put that on my list of things to do. Yesterday I was finishing up vocals on some more songs. I know that Eman has been bubble tweeting and teasing you guys on twitter by playing the ends of some of the songs I’ve worked on with him lol. He’s funny. But I can’t wait until you guys get to hear the WHOLE songs! I’ve really appreciated how you guys have been supportive even during the quiet times, it really makes me feel better :) . I’ll really try to wrap things up though! We’re just trying to plow through things and still get them sounding good. Today I’ll be heading out to Cupertino to the Apple headquarters! It should be fun to go there. I’ll be participating in what they have called Apple Idol for the workers there and it’ll be fun to see everything. I know Brooke White went last year and had a really great time. What have you guys thought of American Idol this season? You excited about the final 2? I think Crystal and Lee are both really talented people. I’m still impressed with how nice of a guy Lee was when I went back to perform earlier this season. He’s a really cool guy. My sister is in love with him. It’s weird because I’ve never seen her obsess over an idol contestant the way she has with him. She certainly didn’t act this way when I was on haha, which is totally ok. I not only got to talk to him but also Crystal and they were both nice to talk to. I’m really excited about going to the finale next week! It’s always so exciting to go back and see everyone there and catch up. It’s so chaotic with it being finale week though! And it’s always a pain trying to find clothes to wear because there’s the red carpet and all the pictures lol. But I’ll figure something out! Well I better get going, but let me know how you’ve felt about this season of American Idol and what performances really stood out to you. Let me know who you’re rooting for too! I’ll update again later. Song for the day – I’m Gonna Get You – Bizarre Inc. This song brings back memories when I was a teeny tiny kid. It was one of my favorite songs back when I still lived in Miami. Good times :)

Live Performance by David Archuleta

When David Archuleta was sixteen years old he auditioned for American Idol, received his golden ticket and headed for Hollywood. He would then go on to win over the hearts of many and become runner up in Season 7. He first hit the music charts when the three songs he performed in the finale (Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me, In This Moment and Imagine) all debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His versions of Longer, Think of Me and Angels also landed on Billboard’s Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.

In July 2008, So You Think You Can Dance used David’s cover of Imagine by John Lennon as featured music for a Pas de deux performance. His self-titled album, David Archuleta, was released in November 2008 and debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The album sold 183,000 copies the first week and quickly went Gold. His first single, Crush, has sold over 1.83 million copies since. Christmas from the Heart was released to rave reviews in October 2009 and is certain to become a Holiday Classic.

David was pleasantly surprised when he was approached to do a Memoir on his journey in life so far! Chords of Strength: A Memoir of Soul, Song and the Power of Perseverance will be released in June 2010. He is currently writing music for his next Album and looking forward to its release this summer.

A staunch supporter of humanitarian endeavors, David is very involved with many Charities, especially those with an emphasis on helping Children around the World.

Archuleta, who emerged onto the music scene through the popular show “American Idol”, will sing two songs during the half-time of the season-opener.

“Having David perform at our season-opener will provide a great night of entertainment for fans of all ages,” said Blaze owner Dave Affleck. “There will be something appealing and exciting for everyone in the family.”

Archuleta was named one of Forbes’ Breakout Stars of 2008. His first album was released in November of 2008, peaking at #2 on the Billboard charts, as did his first single, “Crush,” which has sold 1.5 million digital copies in the United States.

Williams was diagnosed with cancer and underwent multiple surgeries and chemotherapy prior to appearing on the show. He is also a Utah native living in Sandy.

Despite his worries over having his full voice back from a bout of strep throat and having little time to rehearse the song’s version he ended up with, David recovered from his momentary loss of lyrics like a pro. He just kept going and doing what he does best — delivering a heart-felt song to the audience.

March 8, 2010 – LA Times – Idol TrackerDavid Archuleta

Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta has a new album in the works, a book about to hit the shelves, and a very busy few months staring him in the adorably dimpled face. But the 19-year-old native of Murray, Utah, still made time to talk to us between his travels to Nashville for songwriting sessions. The follow-up to David’s gold-selling debut is slated for release later this year, but read on to learn about its progress, as well as David’s experience with the Spanish-language “We Are the World” and his thoughts on the new season of “American Idol.”

What do you think of Season 9 so far?

I just really feel for the contestants. I want to talk to them, to tell them: I went through this, and I know what it’s like. While you’re there, you’re overwhelmed with so many different things. It’s a lot of work but you’re gonna learn so much from it, and there will be so many opportunities that you wouldn’t even imagine coming to you. And all the people who work on “Idol” — so many of them made what I thought was an impossible dream come true. These are the people who can really change your life.

Talent-wise, do they measure up to previous contestants?

I think they’re really talented. They show a lot of their own personalities, and I liked that about them. And there’s some really good singers, too. Like Andrew Garcia, I like the character that he’s shown. I feel like there’s a lot of pressure for them because people are now expecting them to change up the songs, and they’re not sure exactly what to be showing people. It’s matter of balance — changing the song enough to show who you are but still preserving the song for what made it magical.

Is that the secret, David? You would know, having made it all the way to the finale.

It’s difficult. You only have so much time in the day to think about that. Especially for the kids who are in school who study and are supposed to use their brain in another way for a lot of the day. Sometimes it’s hard to focus on both things at once, especially when you have to sing in front of millions of people. But “Idol” is like boot camp — that’s what I always say. It just makes you strong and gives you the knowledge and experience that you’ll need in the future. I’m excited to continue watching.

March 2, 6:23 PM – Children’s Entertainment Examiner – Paula SladeDavid Archuleta

By: Paula Slade -

Not many 19-year olds have experienced life long enough to warrant the writing of a memoir, let alone have it printed and sold by a mainstream publishing house, but that’s all about to change with the Tuesday, May 4, 2010 release of singer/songwriter David Archuleta‘s Chords of Strength: A Memoir of Soul, Song and the Power of Perseverance

Archuleta, became a beloved national entertainment figure in 2008 when he took the country by storm becoming the runner-up for the crowning title of American Idol.

As one of the youngest Idol contestants, his talent and self-effacing manner endeared him to legions of fans, and since that time he has not disappointed his followers, and has continued on a meteoric rise entering the realm of best-selling recording artists on Billboard’s charts.

David Archuleta fans will be interested in the following information from Wheelchair Foundation’s Press Room today:

Jan. 21 (Bloomberg) — Taxpayers will be able to deduct donations for Haiti earthquake relief on their 2009 returns instead of waiting until 2010, under a bill approved by Congress.

“This legislation is an additional incentive for Americans to contribute,” Finance Committee Chairman Senator Max Baucus, a Democrat from Montana, said in a statement.

The Haiti Assistance Income Tax Incentive Act passed unanimously in the Senate today. The House unanimously adopted a similar bill yesterday. President Barack Obama will sign the measure into law, said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.

The legislation allows taxpayers to claim charitable contributions to relief efforts until March 1 as deductions on their 2009 tax returns. Taxpayers generally can deduct donations up to 50 percent of their adjusted gross income, said Eric Smith, a spokesman for the Internal Revenue Service. It may be possible to carry over contributions above that amount for up to five years, he said.

-Jordin Sparks & David Archuleta throw up peace signs at the Allstate “X the TXT” Event at the Jordin Sparks Experience in Miami on Wednesday. The an annual charity gala for Sparks Charities is being hosted in conjunction with the 2010 Pro Bowl and Super Bowl in Miami.

The “X the TXT” event is to promote the stop of texting and driving, something that Jordin is very passionate about. She shared back in November, “I am really passionate about this issue and am so thrilled to have an ‘X the TXT’ event at the Experience. The event is focused on encouraging people to make a difference in their communities and families. By pledging not to text and drive we can save thousands of lives – choosing to not pick up the phone and keeping your eyes on the road can be the difference between life and death.”

The event featured performances by Jordin and fellow “American Idol” alum David Archuleta, plus appearances by Jason Derulo, Larry Fitzgerald, Albert Haynesworth, Lou Ferrigno, Nir and more. At the event, teens and their families were asked to add their thumbprints to a banner as a public pledge not to text and drive. Those who signed the pledge received thumb bands they can wear as a reminder and symbol of their pledge. Jordin and Jodi have proudly worn their bands since making the pledge in November.

David Archuleta performed onstage with Jordin Sparks at the “X the TXT” event as part of the “Jordin Sparks Experience” at the Eden Roc Renaissance Hotel today, February 3, in Miami Beach, Florida.

Jordin has strong ties with the NFL through her charity contributions to the organization, so it is no surprise that she is on location gearing up for the big game this Sunday.

We love that David took the time to paint his lines under his eyes to get in the spirit of the football season!

All proceeds raised by Jordin’s events will benefit a number of charities including the Miami Childrens Hospital.

Tomorrow, February 4th, Jordin will deliver teddy bears to the Hospital along with David Archuleta and one other celebrity guest!

I’ve been traveling down memory lane listening to YouTube videos of David’s songs and wandered my way to David singing “Como La Flor” in San Antonio last spring. It was so touching that he looked to his mom for song choice when the audience requested he sing something in Spanish. The moment is filled with all sorts of adorableness. And with this last week hearing how David and his mom have been so happy to visit his Spanish roots in Honduras, I couldn’t help but post this wonderful memory. Enjoy!

Through all of the delicious side dishes, we really tune in to hear the great voices of talented undiscovered singers. From sultry soul singers, big theatrical wailers, and angelic soothers, Idol has seen every kind of voice imaginable. Here are 12 of the best we’ve heard throughout Idol’s eight seasons:

1) David Archuleta: ‘Crush’
The seventh season runner-up finished strong, receiving 44 percent of the 97 million votes. But it’s not surprising ‘Crush’ was such a hit (and our No.1 ‘American Idol’ song) — Jackson said Archuleta could “sing the phone book” and it would still sound great. Growing up in the ‘American Idol’ generation, he became one of the youngest contestants to participate in the show. To keep better tabs on him, check out his frequent tweets.

Help Your Favorite Twitter Food Personality Win A Shorty!

Nominations are underway for the 2010 Shorty Awards, honoring excellence in the Twitter community over the past year. The second annual competition features 27 categories, with awards to be handed out at a ceremony in NYC at the end of March. Right now, the top five nominees in the category of food are, in descending order:

· @DavidArchie: American Idol Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta. Note: Not a food personality.
· @rickbayless: The Frontera Grill chef/owner and Top Chef Master.

· @Ciaoflorentina:A Romanian born, Hollywood based Italian Food Blogger.

About the Process

The awards recognize each content creator’s entire body of work, not just an individual tweet. Nominations are made by sending a tweet, whether it’s through this site or on Twitter.

In February, the nominees will be narrowed down to five finalists in each category. Winners will be determined by a combination of popular vote and by the members of the new Real-Time Academy of Short Form Arts & Sciences. An awards ceremony, complete with 140-character acceptance speeches, will be held in March in New York City.

Us Weekly’s music editor, Ian Drew, talks with David Archuleta about his heartfelt holiday album!

American Idol alum David Archuleta loves Christmas — so much so that he decided to follow up his self-titled debut album with Christmas From the Heart.

The Season 7 runner-up, 18, talks to Usmagazine.com about the motivation behind his sophomore CD, what inspired him to write a brand-new Christmas song and his recommendations for your holiday party playlist!

Why did you decide to record a Christmas album?
For me, Christmas music has always been such a big time in my life. Ever since I was little, I was just into Christmas music. We used to go around Christmas caroling with Santa hats on, and I did that whole thing, and it was really fun… That’s always been my time to sing. Now it’s like, ‘Whoa! The songs that I’ve been singing every year since I was a little kid — now I get to make an album?’

What has the experience been like?
I never imagined that I would be able to really do a Christmas album like this, to this extent, where I have my own arrangements of these songs that I’ve been singing. It’s just so cool. And it’s like, ‘Wow, no one else sings it this way except for me, and it’s on an album and it’s released.’ It’s just really amazing to see that from where I would sing acapella when I was little at retirement homes and hospitals and neighbor’s houses to now being able to put them on an album.

How did you choose the songs?
Some of them were songs that I’ve sung or I used to sing. So that’s what’s cool. And [the producers] went to Prague for some of these arrangements to have a Prague orchestra, and it was just so cool. It’s just exciting to have some of the songs like “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” and “O Holy Night.” Just those songs — that’s what I grew up singing.

David Archuleta continues to make his talk show holiday rounds. The “American Idol” runner-up, who performed on the Today show Monday (Dec 21), exhaled a sweet rendition of “Melodies of Christmas” on “Live With Regis and Kelly” Tuesday (Dec 22).

Archuleta’s voice sounded smooth and well fitted for the song. He is currently promoting his Christmas Album ‘Christmas From The Heart’, which was released in mid October.

The post-song interview with Kelly and husband Mark Consuelos is particularly fun because David explains how the holidays are celebrated at his home, and we get to see a picture of him and his four siblings, many who look a lot like him.

A-List Music Promotions -
20 December 2009

With a smile that lights up the room, the always adorable David Archuleta took center stage at the Capital One Bank Theatre in Westbury, NY. As it was the last show for Archuleta’s headlining the tour – Archuleta not only displayed songs off his self-titled debut album, but also performed songs off of his Christmas album. With the snow covering New York – the atmosphere truly made it feel a little bit more like Christmas.

Archuleta – who gained the majority of his popularity from ‘American Idol’ – since then has created a buzz, with two major singles – “Crush” and “A Little Too Not Over You”. As this buzz has been created, Archuleta soon found himself at the level of being a teenage hearthrob. In Westbury, NY the theatre was filled with generally teenage girls – screaming their hearts out for the one and only ‘Archie’ as fans know him.

What is truly remarkable about Archuleta is his ability to reach out and interact with his fans throughout his performances. Even with over one thousand people in a room, Archuleta has this angelic aura about him that makes it seem like he’s singing to each person individually throughout that room. During the fan favorite, “My Hands”, being the always charming guy that he is – Archuleta reached out to several fans, holding onto their hands. If only the guy knew that by those quick seconds – he made his fans’ lives, let alone their night. In the always up-beat, “Zero Gravity” Archuleta ultimately pumped up the crowd – making sure each section was granted the attention it deserved, as well as jumping around. Meanwhile- through it all, Archuleta never failed to miss a note. Within the duration of the show – Archuleta even took the time to ‘slow it down a notch’ as he headed towards the piano. Let’s face it, this kid’s talent is undeniable and truly remarkable.

Throughout the duration of the performance, Archuleta proved the soulful artist he is deep down. Not only can he belt out the highest of notes, but he knows how to move an audience at any given moment. Whether he may be flashing that perfect smile of his or doing a classic, ‘hoedown’ Archuleta has what it takes to remain in this industry for a lingering career. Never before have I seen something of what Archuleta has the ability to do, as far as connecting so closely to an audience. Just by his simple smile, you can tell that he truly loves what he’s doing, and that passes over to his extremely happy fans screaming his name. As far as 2010, and the rest of Archuleta’s career – I see only great and bright things ahead. Now, only time will tell.

It was an astonishing sight: teen and ‘tween girls shrieking at and cheering someone singing traditional Christmas songs Friday at Stroudsburg’s Sherman Theater.

But this was an astonishing concert. “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta sang so well in his holiday show – a little more than half of which was Christmas material – that he drew five standing ovations over his 17 songs in 90 minutes and often prompted spontaneous cheers and clapping mid-song.

Backed by a four-person band, he was by turn fun and great on pop material from his debut album; he was touching on covers such as Sting’s “Fields of Gold,” which he sang seated with just an acoustic guitarist backing him; and masterful on the classic yuletide songs.

In fact, the Christmas material more fully showcased Archuleta’s wonderful voice, and the audience reacted more enthusiastically to them.

The show started with Archuleta bounding around the stage for a pop set: a great “Waiting for Yesterday,” holding long, strong, high notes on “A Little Too Not Over You” and emoting with his hands.

He sat at a piano for Five For Fighting’s “The Riddle” – a version that, better than the original, prompted the crowd to break into clapping and shrieks. His big hit “Crush” was a bit rushed, but he nailed the high note, then ended the song with another. He closed the first part of the show with a chilling “Prayer of the Children,” his singing nearly a cappella amid the stark piano accompaniment. It brought the first standing ovation.

December 16, 2009 | By Heather Kobrin | They Will Rock You

David Archuleta Since his second-place finish in American Idol Season 7’s intensely-contested battle of the Davids, eighteen-year-old David Archuleta hasn’t wasted any time making his mark on the pop music landscape. His self-titled debut record, released in 2008, was certified Gold, and both the album and its first single, “Crush,” reached number two on the Billboard charts.

After spending months touring both on his own, as well as with British band McFly and Disney star Demi Lovato, the Utah-based Archuleta continued to build on his successes this year with a new holiday album, “Christmas From The Heart.” The record was released in October, and features holiday classics as well as an original tune that he co-wrote himself.

Recently, I had the pleasure of chatting with Archuleta about his plans for the holidays and his next album during a break on his current tour. Although he reveals that he’s not a Christmas shopper, his sweet nature and abundant enthusiasm for everything he does will no doubt leave fans in the holiday spirit.

Interviewed by: Heather Kobrin | December 2009

You’re on the road right now supporting your Christmas album. How’s the tour going?

It’s going great. It’s been a lot of fun. I’ve been really enjoying performing in the different cities. Although it’s starting to get cold — every day, I’m moving more East.

It must be rewarding to have the opportunity to perform music with so much history behind it — these are songs audiences have known their whole lives.

Yeah! That’s what’s crazy. I mean, even people who aren’t familiar with your arrangements are still familiar with the songs themselves. They have a history with them. That’s what’s so great about holiday music. Everyone enjoys it and has memories from those songs.

I know that during one of your hometown shows, you actually brought your mom in as a special duet partner on “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

Yeah, I did. That was so much fun —I really enjoyed it. I was hoping to get her to come out to more shows, but she didn’t have time because she was keeping busy with the rest of my brothers and sisters. But it was great to be able to have her come up and to share a stage with her.

You’ve got a pretty busy tour schedule for the next few weeks. Are you worried about having enough time to get your Christmas shopping done?

Oh, I’ve never been a Christmas shopper. No one in my family really is. For me, it’s more about spending time with people. One of the best things about holidays is just being able to relax, not have to do a whole lot, and just be with my family, whether it’s watching tv or a movie, playing video games, going out to eat, or even just talking. It’s great, especially since I’m not with them as much as I used to be.

All the same, the runner-up on the seventh season of “American Idol” loves Christmas music so much that he wasn’t concerned with how many other versions of “Silent Night” exist.

“Christmas music is honestly probably what I’ve performed more than anything else, ever since I was a little kid,” Archuleta, 18, says by phone from St. Louis on a tour that stops Thursday at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods in Mashantucket. The show, he says, is split between pop songs and holiday songs.

“I remember caroling with my brothers and sisters and doing holiday shows at retirement homes,” says Archueleta, who is one of four siblings. “So seeing how holiday music can affect people has been one of the biggest influences on my career. People enjoy Christmas music so much, including me.”

Most of the songs on the record are traditional, such as “O Holy Night,” “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Angels We Have Heard on High,” though Archuleta lands a credit, too, for co-writing “Melodies of Christmas.”

It’s not his first: He also wrote a pair of songs on his self-titled 2008 debut, along with two iTunes deluxe-edition bonus tracks. Archuleta hopes to contribute more of his ideas to his next pop album, which he started working on earlier this year before pausing to focus on the Christmas tour. He plans to resume work on his sophomore album early in 2010.

“Next month, after the holidays, I’ll be working more on writing, and writing with other people and talking to the label and discussing the direction I want to go,” he says. “There’s some songs I’m happy with already, but you never know what’s going to end up on the album.”

David Archuleta CFTH‘Idol’ finalist Archuleta in Waukegan for holiday concert

As Adam Lambert proves, being an “American Idol” runner-up isn’t a bad thing.

It certainly has worked out well for David Archuleta, the smiley, clean-cut, Utah teenager who finished second to David Cook on 2008′s “American Idol.”

In his life after “Idol,” Archuleta has had three songs on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, put out two CDs and become a teen heartthrob.

He’ll perform in Waukegan Friday, singing holiday songs from his new CD, “Christmas from the Heart.”

We spoke to Archuleta (nicknamed “Archie” by his fellow “Idol” contestants) about everything from Lambert to Christmas caroling with his kid sisters. Below is an excerpt:

Q. You’re considered a teen idol, you know.

A. (Laughs) Actually, a mix of people like my music. Older people like it, too.

Q. When did you realize you had made the big time? Was there a moment when it hit you?

A. It’s weird hearing yourself at a restaurant or a store. That’s happened to me. People don’t realize you’re there until the song starts playing. Sometimes, I start singing along. What else can I do?

Q. Who from Season 7 do you still keep in touch with? David Cook, of course?

A. Yeah, David Cook. I keep in touch with most of them, actually. Brooke (White), Jason (Castro) … everyone. I spent a good part of the year with them so we all became friends.

Q. What do you think of Adam Lambert?

A. I don’t watch TV very much. This year has been crazy. I think he and Kris (Allen) and Allison (Iraheta) … they’re all really talented people. They have great voices.

Q. What about Adam Lambert’s performance at the American Music Awards?

A. I didn’t see it, so I guess I don’t have an opinion about it.

Q. Your fans like to hear details of your personal life. Anything you can share? Do you have a girlfriend? A new dog?

A. I wrote about this in my last blog, but I have two new cats. Actually, they’re my sister’s cats. I like cats. I like animals. Their names are Tsuki and Katsu. My sister’s really into Japanese stuff. Tsuki means “victorious” and Katsu means “moon.” They fetch and play tag. They’re fun.

Q. You’re coming to the Chicago area. Can you talk a little bit about your show?

A. The first half is pop stuff and non-holiday music, and then I’ll sing Christmas music. It is a Christmas tour. I don’t really do anything (from) “Idol.” I do some new covers, though.

Q. Is Christmas one of your favorite holidays?

A. Yeah, I love it. I used to go Christmas caroling when I was little with my brothers and sisters, so it’s fun to have those songs on my Christmas album. It’d be fun to (go caroling) again, but I don’t think I’ll be home.

Q. What’s on the horizon for you?

A. I’m working on another pop album, and there’s a bit of time that I took out in October and November to just write with people. It’s been really fun. I’ve been able to show more of my personality. I’ve been able to show more of my thoughts and ideas.

Western Colorado has given David Archuleta an early Christmas present.

The “American Idol” runner-up performs Saturday, Dec. 5, before a sold out crowd at the Avalon Theatre. Doors to the theater open at 6:30 p.m. The show begins at 7:30 p.m.

Along with his show in Grand Junction, Archuleta performs Sunday, Dec. 6, in Beaver Creek.

“I finally have a reason to travel around Colorado,” Archuleta said Tuesday from Los Angeles.

Archuleta, 18, is riding a tour bus across the country as part of the “Christmas From the Heart” tour to promote his new CD released in October.

During his show in Grand Junction, Archuleta plans to perform pop songs as well as Christmas songs from his new CD. He began his Christmas tour Nov. 24, and it ends Dec. 20, giving Archuleta the chance to celebrate Christmas with his immediate family. Archuleta grew up in Murray, Utah.

Last year, Archuleta met his family in Las Vegas to celebrate Christmas after a whirlwind 2008, which included him being runner-up on the seventh season of “American Idol.” After “American Idol” finished taping, Archuleta and other contestants of the reality show toured the country.

“It was nice to have a week with my family and no one else,” Archuleta said of the Christmas vacation. “I just loved it. We played video games and watched movies.”

Although the teenager isn’t promoting “American Idol” any longer, he is still busy making his own name in the entertainment world.

Fortunately, Christmas is Archuleta’s favorite time of year, and he is excited about his Christmas tour. His Christmas shows give him a certain sense of joy he also hopes is present in the audience.

“With the Christmas part of the show, the goal is to be able to bring that spirit of Christmas out,” he said. “That is the point of the Christmas show and (to) leave people with that feeling.”

Archuleta’s favorite Christmas songs are “O Holy Night” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”

In fact, Archuleta can’t even say the title of that last song without belting it out in song.

The loyal following Archuleta developed while on the “American Idol” likely helped him sell out the Grand Junction show and for those fans Archuleta plans to sing his pop music.

Count Ron Wilson, event promoter with Sandstone Concerts, an Archuleta fan. He watched the Utah singer/songwriter make it all the way to the finals before losing the popular vote to David Cook.

“My kids thought (Archuleta) was the best,” Wilson said. “I thought he had a really good voice and a lot of potential.”

David Archuleta Anaheim Grove OCRA packed room full of “Arch Angels” got an early Christmas gift thanks to the arrival of David Archuleta Wednesday night.

The almost 18-year-old singer brought his youthful approach and appealing tenor to the Grove of Anaheim as part of a 17-city tour of the U.S. in support of his second album, Christmas from the Heart, presenting a 90-minute show divided into two distinct parts.

For the first 40 minutes, Archuleta performed an eight-song set of hits and cover material before taking a short break to change into a dress jacket –- and then re-emerge to sing eight songs from his holiday disc from October.

It took only minutes of watching the concert to cement the idea that the Miami native who grew up in Utah, runner-up on the seventh season of American Idol, continues to be the seemingly shy and unassuming personality he revealed on the popular reality show. However, Archuleta -– who turns 19 on Dec. 28 –- also possesses an impressive voice. Here, he used that instrument in support of a mostly effective mix of upbeat dance numbers, R&B-tinged pop tunes and traditional Yuletide songs.

In addition to the hits from his self-titled debut, such as “Crush,” Archuleta performed several effective covers to give added weight to the show. Highlights included a take on Five for Fighting’s “The Riddle,” for which Archuleta also played piano, and an acoustic take on Sting’s “Fields of Gold,” dedicated to the late singer Eva Cassidy.

The last half of the night proved to be the most artistically satisfying, with the singer performing a song he co-wrote (“Melodies of Christmas”) as well as challenging classical material (notably “Ave Maria”) and numbers for which he sang in French (“Pat-a-Pan”) and Spanish (“Riu Riu Chiu”).

My biggest complaint, however, has to do with the arrangements, as there were few instrumental sections in any of the songs when Archuleta wouldn’t sing; the backing music alone could have shined or offered artful segues into the next verse or chorus.

A sad and lasting impact of the American Idol formula is that in order to elicit cheers, a vocalist like Archuleta must hit the top of his range with huge notes; the impact of a strong but nuanced song or musical arrangement is mostly lost on undiscerning listeners, as evidenced both in episodes of the vocal talent show and the reaction of many in the crowd at the Grove.

Yet Archuleta closed his show with a powerful and extended version of “O Holy Night” that served as another reminder of the power of his vocal ability.

Opener Benton Paul performed a pleasing blend of modern melodic rock across 25 minutes, his sound a cross between the Fray and John Mayer.

Archuleta_Rabobank_11-28-09“Surprise, we’re going to see David Archuleta in concert in Bakersfield,” my husband announced a week before the concert. You see, I had already purchased a VIP ticket along with my Archubuddy ArchieFanDoc to see David when he comes to Anaheim this week, and we would make it a girl’s night out. But unbeknownst to me, my husband, deep down inside, yearned to see and hear THE VOICE himself, and at the same time give me an early Christmas present. And being that the Bakersfield concert was on a Saturday, our whole family could go. Our tickets were 14 rows from the stage in the center section–not bad, I thought, for regular-priced tickets. I was bursting with excitement at the chance to not only see David’s Christmas concert twice but to go with my whole family. But even more of a surprise was when my husband announced a few days before the concert, “Honey, I actually got you a VIP ticket so you could see David before the show and get an even better seat.” (Okay, everybody altogether say, “Awww.”) Who has a husband like this? Show of hands. I know there are probably a few out there, and if there is, let us know. Oh my gosh, now I was shaking with anticipation. Since the Bakersfield concert was a two-hour drive, we made arrangements to stay overnight at the hotel next door to the Rabobank Theater. Perfect. Well, not exactly.

My husband had ordered my VIP ticket in his name, and when he read the fine print that the purchaser/attendee needed to be present at the door, he immediately contacted ILAA to change the name on the list to mine, and he received an e-mail confirmation that I was now “on the list.” Okay, everything was set, right? NO. So I get in line for the VIP, and my husband decided to stay just long enough to make sure my name was on the list. I reassured him that even if his name was on the list, they would allow a guest to take his place as long as he showed his ID. So we got up to the check-in table with our paperwork, and the second Kristin heard my last name, a look of dread came over her face. OH NO! She informed us that she was told by her staff that my husband’s reservation had been cancelled, not changed. WHAT!!! CANCELLED!!! NO!!! She looked at our paperwork and felt so embarrassed. She could see there had been a BIG miscommunication on the part of ILAA. She was so sweet and apologetic, but I just wanted to know, AM I GOING TO GET A VIP TICKET OR NOT? Well, she assured me she would do whatever was necessary to secure another ticket in the first 10 rows and not to worry, she would be right back. Well, I’m still thinking that a replacement ticket was going to land me in the 10th row at the outer edge of the stage. (Well, at least I would get to see David for the VIP mini-concert and picture taking.) I was allowed to go on inside the VIP room while she rummaged up a replacement ticket. While waiting for her to return to the VIP room, I met a very nice fan who was there by herself, as her family didn’t understand her ODD. We had fun comparing notes of our devotion to David. She too had fallen for THE VOICE listening to David sing Heaven during Hollywood week of AI. Anyway, before too long, Kristin found me. She had a big smile on her face and handed me a replacement ticket with further apologies. I thanked her and quickly viewed the ticket for my seat location. It was much better than I could have hoped for even if there hadn’t been a mishap–front row Orchestra (just behind the three rows in Pit) just left of center. PERFECT. No one would be right in front of me. Everything was right with the world again!
