So glad that she tweeted that information. Maybe that well unite us fans. I just hope that David doesn’t lose too many fans because of all this uproar. I still don’t see any harm in seeing his picture in some blog, but if he doesn’t want to be seen for these two years, it’s his right. David, please try to stay away from any camera, lol.
cq, I really doubt this will smooth things over. We have a lot of hall monitors who love playing good/bad cop on all sides of any issue. Tell like to tell people what they should do/think/feel. Only when David returns will things return to relative normal and the hall monitors can put their whistles away.
I’ve always wondered…do other fanbases fight over these kinds of issues too. #thingsthatmakeyougohmmm
pouncer84, I’m confused. I haven’t seen any “fighting” here at AFS, I thought the comments in the r.e.s.p.e.c.t thread were heartfelt and well thought out. I was just going to say I really appreciated everyone’s comments. I learned a lot from them, especially from those whose takes on the issue were different than mine.
I have also failed to see any “hall monitors” here. Again, my experience throughout all of this has been nothing but a polite exchange of thoughts and ideas, very commendable on such an emotional topic.
pouncer, there aren’t any “hall monitors” here. regardless of what side people saw things on before kari’s tweet made it clear which side had it correct, no one here tried to say anything against those who were looking at the pics and blogs. the whole point was if david doesn’t want you spreading the info around online, are you going to support that. that was what janey posted and that was the discussion she was looking for. other people took it off topic and made it something it wasn’t.
or did you mean in the fanbase in general? because that i will agree with. there have been people who think that regardless of what side they are on, that they are 100% right and they have the right to be bossy and mean about it. i wonder the same thing about other artists too. i’ve never been involved in any fanbase before like this but i would guess they all go through the same type issues.
Sorry, I didn’t have a lot of time to post, so my thoughts didn’t quite come out how I wanted it to. No, didn’t mean to imply “hall monitors” were here. Here its been pretty drama free and kinda calm. Something I’ve always liked about this place. At other fansites and especially on twitter, its been WOW. People are hurting on all sides and the monitoring isn’t helping anyone feel better. Even with these tweets from Kari, I still saw people on both sides say “see I was right”.
Ironically, the one tweet that sent me into a crying mess was from Davidsbackpack. It said…”What do you do when you miss someone so much your heart is breaking? Remember dont take it out on your family or friends. Expand your love.” I’ve always felt that DBP was Jeff because he always seemed to know what/when to say things.
Its only been a month and sometimes it feels like things won’t ever calm down. I deal with the separation by saying “good morning, have a great day David” when I go to sleep, and “sweet dreams David” I get off work. Then, I concentrate on things at work and the day flies by. After work is the problem since that’s when my mind wanders.
That’s what I like about here. People on both sides can rationally discuss why they feel the way they do and talk about it and no one is mean about it. It doesn’t turn into a big argument. And that’s how it should be IMO.
Thank you Kari . I know David worked extremely hard to leave stuff for fans including time he could have spent with his family and friends. He went far above and beyond what any of us expected. I am touched by all he did for us and all you continue to do. Not quite sure I understand your last sentence. I would hope that nobody would physically seek him out or spy on him, nor attempt to contact him in any way other than via thoughtful letters/cards to your Florida box. But I hope you don’t think he would mind us looking at the occasional group photo he posed for. I know there is some pressure on missionaries to be upbeat and spiritual in their communications home and David has always been upbeat with us anyway. So actually seeing that David and his fellow missionaries are happy and well is very comforting for me and some others. Like you and like most of David’s good fans, we are not just fans of the star. We are fans of his life.
Violet, she wasn’t talking about physically seeking him out in South America. She was saying he did all the things he did to keep us happy while he was gone so we wouldn’t go seeking out missionary information like the blogs and the pictures while he was gone. Those are his wishes.
fa3ryg1rl:

I love you but sorry, I disagree with your interpretation based in Kari’s first tweet. BTW I think the “hall monitors” someone mentioned has to do with some fans saying that others who don’t follow their own interpretation of what David said are not obeying his wishes i.e. being bad fans. The stupid part is we all respect David – we just have slightly different interpretations of what he said. Some interpret it that anything mission is off-limits (a perfectly valid decision for fansites that draw the line there). Some interpret it that photos that were knowingly posed-for, which are made available by family or mission on the web for viewing, were expected and meant to be shared by the participants, and that it is not disrespecting anyone’s privacy to view them. The bottom line is, nobody can read David’s mind. No fan can lay claim to the one correct interpretation of what David said or even what Kari said. No fan should be accusing others of going against David’s wishes based on such a gray area. And I know based on past experience someone will now say there is no gray, it’s black & white. It is gray for me and many others.
I guess I’m just having trouble seeing how it’s gray still after Kari cleared it up. Not seeking him out in his mission means focus on what he’s left us (the tidbits from Kari, the new music etc.) and not mission related things. Kari knew what was going on with everyone arguing and IMO she cleared it up very well.
People will just have to agree to disagree. I was one that said if people know David doesn’t want this and they do it anyway, they are disrespecting his wishes because that’s how I feel. It’s up to each person to decide what they will do and I don’t judge anyone whatsoever whatever their choice because I’m not their mother and I’m not God.
My question I guess to you is when Kari says “not to search him out while on his mission” when you take it context that whole tweet, what does that mean to you? I ask in all seriousness.
Right, she isn’t talking about physically seeking him out. Her first tweet is about missionary blogs. She mentions people searching missionary sites to find David. Her second tweet talks about how David worked hard so that people would not search him out while he is on his mission. She is clearly talking about searching missionary blogs for information about David.
Absolutely because she’s saying the blogs aren’t meant for us but what we choose to do with them is up to us. She understands the curiosity and is not judging the people who choose to search them, view them etc.
However, the second tweet is just as you said. David worked hard to give us enough things so that we wouldn’t search him out in his mission (her exact words). Why are people having a hard time understanding what her tweets mean? They’re very clear to me.
The operative thought is if you feel that searching on mission blogs is not appropriate, THEN DON’T DO IT!
If you are one who feels comforted by seeing that David is doing well and want to look at the pictures, PLEASE ENJOY YOURSELF.
But for heaven sake please allow either side of the fence do what they wish without scolding them.
Of course we all have different ways and feelings in our celebration of our beautiful and excellent David Archuleta.
Both camps are right. remember what LDS president Uckdorf quoted from a bumper sticker he saw, “DON’T JUDGE ME BECAUSE I SIN DIFFERENTLY THAN YOU DO”
The point is that it is up to the individual as to what they do with the missionary blogs but by searching for these missionary blogs and posting them everywhere you are going against David’s wishes. If it wasn’t clear before then Kari’s tweet should have clarified it. Kari made it clear that David worked hard to leave fans with things so they would let him have this private time for himself. It isn’t about the fans and whether or not searching out and sharing info and pics comforts them it is about David and what he wants. Of course people are going to do whatever they want to do. It would be nice if others disagree would do it without calling other people names.
And that Kris is everything I have been saying too. If people know his wishes and still go against them, that is up to them. If they decide to respect his wishes, that is also up to them. But they can’t deny it’s doing something against what he’s asked now.
I agree. I think David was quite clear about what he wanted but Kari’s subsequent tweets have left no room for doubt about what David’s wishes are. I mean she agreed with a tweet that said that RT and posting info about David’s mission that did not come from him or Kari is against his wishes. There is no other interpretation of that. It is pretty point blank. She then tweeted that is is up to the individual what they want to do but David worked hard so that people would not seek him out while he was on his mission. People will do what they want. But it is been made quite clear that to continue doing what they have been doing is against his wishes.
I agree with Dorothy and I hope Kris wasn’t implying that she was name calling because she wasn’t. She was just merely stating that we deal with David’s missionin our own way. I choose not to share the links or even seek them out, but they are everywhere it seems, so when I see them especially on my FB newsfeed, I click on them. I love seeing David’s smiling face and that he’s happy with his decision to go on his mission. Search him out to some means also on the internet, I view it as meaning physically searching him out, flying to Chile and going to LDS wards to find him or even if you already live there tryhing to find him, ask for an autograph or photo, or calling the mission there to try and seek him out. But, to each his own interpretation. God bless David during his mission and I hope to God none of this bickering is anything he knows about. He certainly doesn’t need to hear about it, that’s not what he’s there for or should be focused on.
I agree with you Dorothy that no one should judge what anyone else is doing. I myself have been judged because I said that when I watched the goodbye vlog and read Kari’s original tweets, I was told that when I thought David wouldn’t want us searching out the missionary vlogs and pics, that how would I know what David would want and I’m not his Mom and on and on. I thought what I thought because that’s how I took the vlog and tweets. Which is why I was so defensive at times. I never once judged anyone or put words in his mouth. I watched the vlog and read the tweets and to me it was really clear. Her recent response is validation to me that I wasn’t wrong.
Again IT IS MY PRIVILEGE TO INTERPRET THAT MY WAY!!!
Please don’t loose sleep over this. I am not going to change your view (what ever side) please please don’t try to change mine. That is what is splitting us.
Many people claim be KNOWING what was Kari’s and Davids intent.
Incidentally I am not one who goes to the missionary blogs. I read what others have posted about them, but I do that only in my PRIVATE group on Facebook. I don’t spread any of it around on the internet. BUT BUT BUT. I also don’t think it is my right to be as Janey put it “Hall Monitor” Like it or not if you are trying to get me to change my mind then yes that is being a “hall monitor” (or at least that’s my interpretation)
Again like I said IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT DON’T LOOK, but allow me the FREEDOM of LOOKING IF I WANT.
If that concept it too hard then understand this. We are all given free will in this life. But along with that free will that we are given we also need to pay heed to the consequences that follow.
If my eyeball are going to fall out because I looked at a picture or read something about David on his mission, then that is the consequences I must accept.
Just because you tell me the flame is hot does not mean I am not going to test it out and find out for my self and put my hand in the flame.
Those are consequences we must live with.
Please allow me my freedom to do so. I will allow you your freedom to not look. I will also HAVE to allow you your freedom to keep swatting at me when I do look. Pretty soon I am still going to look, but I am not going to converse with you about it. (pretty fast way to loose friends is to CONTROL them)
I can only speak for myself but I am not claiming to know Kari and David’s intent. I only go by what they said. I have only been repeating what Kari has tweeted. Kari has made her intent quite clear.
I also do not allow you to do anything. I do not have that power over you. I can not force or stop you from searching for information about David on his mission. I can not stop you from looking. All I am doing is posting my opinions on a fan site. Oddly enough, it seems like you are trying to stop us who have differing opinions from giving it.
“I only go by what they said. I have only been repeating what Kari has tweeted. Kari has made her intent quite clear. ”
Kris (and fa3rygirl), you fail to accept the fact that there is a possibility (be it slight or strong) Kari did mean something else than what you think what she meant. It’s fine you think it’s clear, but you need to accept the fact that others may and CAN interpret it differently.
Languages like “I think David is quite clear” and “Kari made her intent quite clear” really means, to some, “my interpretation is right and yours is wrong”.
Vinelover, please explain what else Kari meant. Her first tweet she replied “thank you for saying that” to this tweet: By RTing or posting anything abt David’s Mission that was not sent by him or @kariontour you are going against what David has asked of us!
She thanked someone for tweeting that they are going against David’s wishes if they RT or post anything about his mission that was not sent by him or Kari. How can you interpret that in multiple ways? What else did she mean? Sometimes something is what it is. What other way can that be taken?
Her second tweet she specifically mentions searching missionary sites. She says that she doesn’t think anyone is a bad fan for doing it and she understands that people are curious. She adds a part 2 where she talks about how she is doing her best to keep us updated and that David sacrificed time with family and friends. She mentions that he hoped that we would be happy with this so that we would not search him out while he is on his mission. She is talking about searching missionary sites. She is not talking about fans physically trying to find David in South America. The two tweets are connected to each other. It is a continuation. It is the same thought.
If she is talking about searching missionary sites why would she mean David was hoping people would not be physically searching him out on his mission?
Yep, your respond above has confirmed that you think you are right, therefore others are wrong, and you think you can and are using this conclusion of yours to judge others. Am I correct? This is a yes/no question.
I have no interest to discuss who’s interpretation is correct. I just like to understand where you are coming from. So I would appreciate if your response, if any, will include a yes or a no.
I understand people can interpret things differently, however I don’t understand how people are interpreting this differently. It’s very obvious they are though, and I do accept that because I can see it happening… I’m still trying to figure out HOW other people are taking those tweets and what else you could get out of them. I’ve gotten a few answers on what other people think and I’m sorry, but it just doesn’t make sense to me. Just like what I think, and how I think it’s so clear probably doesn’t make sense to others. I do understand it goes both ways. I never said I didn’t. I’m very aware not everyone agrees with how I see things. I never said they had to.
And yes, you are right. I do think my interpretation is right. Don’t you think yours is right? Or are you not sure and you think it could be taken more than one way?
And I am absolutely NOT using the fact that I think my interpretation is correct to judge others at ALL. I could care less what other people are doing. I’m concerned with myself only. Just because I’m participating in a discussion here and don’t happen to agree with everyone that posts doesn’t mean I judge them.
I really would like to hear how you think what he said in his vlog and what Kari tweeted, when you take it all together, meant to you. And that’s not sarcastic, I’m really very curious. And that goes for anyone who doesn’t agree with me, I would like to read about what you think.
Vinelover, I think I answered your post respectfully. I also think i stated where I am coming from. It would be nice if you would respond in the same way.
Dorothy, who is trying to get you to change your mind or control you? I haven’t seen anyone here doing that. I’ve seen conversation about how both sides see things. Everyone can say what they want here, as long as they are polite. Honestly, since I only see it one way, I like hearing how others see things so I can better understand. I tweeted today to ask the very same thing because when I read the vlog and the tweets, I only see it as Kris does and I’m curious what “he hoped that would make everyone happy and not search him out on his mission” means to other people. And that is the honest truth in why I asked.
I could care less if people are looking or not looking. I don’t think it’s right to publicly spread it around but that’s my prerogative and if others are going to do that, then so be it. Like I said before, I’m not here to tell others to look or not look, spread it around or not spread it around. I’m no ones mother and I’m not God. I said that before too and meant it.
I do not seek out missionary blogs only because David is mentioned in them. I have read quite a few of them and the majority did not mention David. I have simply followed some trails from blog to blog because I was fascinated. I am not LDS and these blogs have been educational and inspiring. However, I fail to see how reading a blog that mentions David in any way affects his mission experience. Does my looking at his picture as one of a very large group cheapen his mission value? I truly truly fail to see that. Seeking him out in any physical way, I would never dream of doing that. I don’t even send him mail since I believe the time he takes to read fan mail does take away from his mission time and knowing him he wants to read his fanmail. Everyone certainly has a right to do as their conscience dictates and I hope all fans will respect their fellow fans decisions.
There is no surprise people talked about “name calling”, “hall monitors”, “scolding us” here. Just look at this thread, it looks like this:
Fan1: I think….
Kris: But you are wrong, and you are being disrespectful to David
fa3rygirl: I agree, you are doing the wrong thing
Fan2: But I think…
Kris: No no no, you are wrong, it’s so easy to see you are wrong….
fa3rygirl: Yea, I don’t understand why it’s so difficult to see, Fan2 you are wrong…
Fan3: But in my opinion…
Kris: Nup, you are totally wrong, the truth is this…and of course you can do what you want, but you are wrong (guilt trip).
fa3rygirl: I agree…Fan3 you are wrong…it’s so clear….
conversation with this pattern, it’s hard for Fan1,2,3 and other lurker to not think that you guys are not policing others’ thoughts. I understand that you may not think it’s a problem, just like Kris think it’s IMPOSSIBLE that people can interpret Kari’s tweet differently, but for many, this is not a pleasant environment and totally took the fun out of this fandom thing.
I think I am done here. I just want you guys (on both sides) to step back and see what type of environment you have created.
PS. as for my point of view fa3rygirl, my answer may surprise you. But like I said I have no interest to discuss who’s interpretation is correct.
You obviously can see things the way you want. So can I. I’m willing to discuss it and I’m totally open to hearing the other side, but you’re not willing to say what that is. That’s not policing people or hall monitoring. How many times do I have to say I don’t care if people are looking at blogs or pictures or what they are doing? I can have an opinion that it’s wrong just like you can have an opinion it’s right. It works both ways. I could care less what other people are doing. If they want to read the blogs, look at the pictures, spread it around wherever, go for it. I’m just saying I choose not to because *I* think it’s wrong. That’s a far cry from policing.
There have been many other instances were people argue about things in this fanbase, say it’s not fun anymore, etc. It happens and people get over it. The discussion here has been very civil. I asked for the other side and no one wants to say. I’m perfectly willing to listen. I’m not sitting there going nananana you’re wrong, go away. I’m asking so I can better understand.
Vinelover, I find that you are doing the very thing that you are accusing us of doing. You are not willing to respectfully discuss what we have written. Instead you just want to call us names and accuse us of sitting in judgment of others. You claim that I am telling other people that they are wrong and yet you are telling me that I am wrong for giving my opinion. And you are putting words in my “mouth”. It seems to me like you are telling me that is wrong to disagree with you and others who feel the same way. It is even as if you are “scolding” me for giving my opinion. When you post on a message board people are going to reply to what you write. They are not always going to agree. I also do not mind if people disagree with me and tell me respectfully why they feel differently. You have not done this. You are also not going to lay the blame for taking the fun out of the fandom for you on me because I posted my opinion in these particular posts. Whether or not the fandom is fun for you is on you and not me. I do not control that.
stepping back from name calling. and i do apologize if i got carried away with that. sincerly i do ot ant to be name calling. my position is that I feel good about enjoying what other missionary’s families have blogged. I stated that I had not personally looked on their blogs but I have looked at comments and looked at pictures from the blogs. I truly appreciate that we have a different interpretations.
I will continue doing what I am doing, and I appreciate that others will do the same by not looking.
with that I step down from the dais and return back to my comfortable chair and my big spoon chuck full of Nutella. And chat with my other friends there. I am glad we had this discussion. I respect All of you, and you ideas. I am sincere in my apology of being in judgement. I do ask forgiveness. I am sincere in my extended arms (at first I was going to. just say hand, but arms are more caring and warm) in friendship. Jesus Christ invited us: love one another. he said even as I have loved you ye ought to love one another. I don’t want to struggle with this any longer. so again I extend my arms to you.
I hope that, and believe that David is ok with that.
I may not understand how it can be interpreted any other way, but I respect that others don’t interpret it the same way I do. It seems no one really want so tell me how they took Kari’s tweets so I’ll just leave it be. Some might not like the discussion, and if that’s so, they don’t have to take part or read the comments. Personally, I liked the discussion. Most of us are adults here and it’s nice to talk things out sometimes. Thanks for the offer of friendship, it’s appreciated.
very well said, Kari… i sincerely appreciate everything what David and your team have been doing..
we’re just here. nandito kami :0

But for heaven sake please allow either side of the fence do what they wish without scolding them.
Of course we all have different ways and feelings in our celebration of our beautiful and excellent David Archuleta.
Both camps are right. remember what LDS president Uckdorf quoted from a bumper sticker he saw, “DON’T JUDGE ME BECAUSE I SIN DIFFERENTLY THAN YOU DO”
Dorothy Johnson(Quote)
The point is that it is up to the individual as to what they do with the missionary blogs but by searching for these missionary blogs and posting them everywhere you are going against David’s wishes. If it wasn’t clear before then Kari’s tweet should have clarified it. Kari made it clear that David worked hard to leave fans with things so they would let him have this private time for himself. It isn’t about the fans and whether or not searching out and sharing info and pics comforts them it is about David and what he wants. Of course people are going to do whatever they want to do. It would be nice if others disagree would do it without calling other people names.

Kris, out of 70 comments we’ve had only 1 incident of name calling. I think we’re doing pretty well. I agree, I’m all for keeping things nice.
janey(Quote)
And that Kris is everything I have been saying too. If people know his wishes and still go against them, that is up to them. If they decide to respect his wishes, that is also up to them. But they can’t deny it’s doing something against what he’s asked now.
fa3ryg1rl(Quote)
Kris(Quote)
Others are not seeing that and I’m not sure why…
fa3ryg1rl(Quote)

Her recent response is validation to me that I wasn’t wrong.
fa3ryg1rl(Quote)
(pretty fast way to loose friends is to CONTROL them)
Dorothy(Quote)
I can only speak for myself but I am not claiming to know Kari and David’s intent. I only go by what they said. I have only been repeating what Kari has tweeted. Kari has made her intent quite clear.
I also do not allow you to do anything. I do not have that power over you. I can not force or stop you from searching for information about David on his mission. I can not stop you from looking. All I am doing is posting my opinions on a fan site. Oddly enough, it seems like you are trying to stop us who have differing opinions from giving it.
Kris(Quote)
“I only go by what they said. I have only been repeating what Kari has tweeted. Kari has made her intent quite clear. ”
Kris (and fa3rygirl), you fail to accept the fact that there is a possibility (be it slight or strong) Kari did mean something else than what you think what she meant. It’s fine you think it’s clear, but you need to accept the fact that others may and CAN interpret it differently.
Languages like “I think David is quite clear” and “Kari made her intent quite clear” really means, to some, “my interpretation is right and yours is wrong”.
VineLover(Quote)
Kris(Quote)
Yep, your respond above has confirmed that you think you are right, therefore others are wrong, and you think you can and are using this conclusion of yours to judge others. Am I correct? This is a yes/no question.
I have no interest to discuss who’s interpretation is correct. I just like to understand where you are coming from. So I would appreciate if your response, if any, will include a yes or a no.
VineLover(Quote)
And that goes for anyone who doesn’t agree with me, I would like to read about what you think.
fa3ryg1rl(Quote)
Vinelover, I think I answered your post respectfully. I also think i stated where I am coming from. It would be nice if you would respond in the same way.
Ditto, fa3ryg1rl.
Kris(Quote)
I said that before too and meant it.
fa3ryg1rl(Quote)

Kris and fa3rygirl,
There is no surprise people talked about “name calling”, “hall monitors”, “scolding us” here.
VineLover(Quote)
That’s a far cry from policing.
fa3ryg1rl(Quote)
There have been many other instances were people argue about things in this fanbase, say it’s not fun anymore, etc. It happens and people get over it. The discussion here has been very civil. I asked for the other side and no one wants to say. I’m perfectly willing to listen. I’m not sitting there going nananana you’re wrong, go away. I’m asking so I can better understand.
fa3ryg1rl(Quote)
Kris(Quote)
stepping back from name calling. and i do apologize if i got carried away with that. sincerly i do ot ant to be name calling. my position is that I feel good about enjoying what other missionary’s families have blogged.
Dorothy Johnson(Quote)
I may not understand how it can be interpreted any other way, but I respect that others don’t interpret it the same way I do. It seems no one really want so tell me how they took Kari’s tweets so I’ll just leave it be. Some might not like the discussion, and if that’s so, they don’t have to take part or read the comments. Personally, I liked the discussion. Most of us are adults here and it’s nice to talk things out sometimes. Thanks for the offer of friendship, it’s appreciated.
