I found this lovely gem in my inbox last night (thanks, @hungrycaterer). This interview was done the day of David’s first American Idol Tour show. the video says Phoenix but we know the first show was in Glendale. I remember staying up all night to catch those first videos. This was back in the day before CCC (crappy cellcasts), UStreaming and before we had fans who would upload videos super fast, seemingly from the parking lot. I also remember it was during the Idol Tour that I met my AFS “boss”, ArchieFanDoc. Since we both live on the West Coast, we’d see each other leaving links in the comments on Masterclasslady to all of David’s performances.

While it wasn’t our intent to have MCL comment on each individual song in each city, one thing led to another, and she did, missing only one performance. She, along with all of us were so taken by the nuances and change-ups in every show, they she couldn’t help but make note of it. I can still recall which version of which song he did in a certain city. Maybe we should do a contest sometime? Post a few audios and guess which performance it was from? Bragging rights (and maybe a signed T-shirt) to the winner!

What say you, Cathy?

Which leads me to another topic.

Many of my fan/friends and other sites that I visit daily have their own way of tracking David’s time over the next 2 years. I noticed I was having a really strong reaction to that. There was something jarring about seeing the number of days left, the number of days he was gone, however it was presented, my reaction was so negative that I can no longer visit those sites or follow those fans on twitter.

A couple of thoughts occurred to me. David is not incarcerated. He left on his own free will and from his tweet via Kari last week, he is having a marvelous time. In addition, we have no idea when he’ll return or what David will want to do when he gets back. While reading a missionary blog the other night (unrelated to David) a mom asked her son what he wanted in his care package and her son replied, “6 more months here.”

I actually googled “how to make time go faster” last night and the results supported my thinking. The question was asked by pregnant women waiting for their babies and by military wives waiting for their deployed husbands to return. The way to make time go by faster is to stay in the present and to not count the days. Having done that myself the last few days, I know it works best for me.

How about for you?

  1. That totally works for me too, Janey. If I’m watching the clock, the day goes slow. If I’m super busy at work or at home, the time speeds by. I’m someone who has more ideas of what to do with my day than I have time, so days and weeks seem to melt together. When you are sick with the 24 hour flu, 24 hours seems like an eternity. When you are at a David Archuleta concert, it’s over before you can blink your eyes. So, the best way to make time go fast is to find ways to enjoy each day.

  2. That’s a great point! Counting the time down always makes time go by more slowly.

    Awesome read!

  3. Interesting take on the countdowns, Janey. I know exactly what you mean. I’ve been trying to take things day by day because none of us knows what’s going to happen this afternoon, never mind two years from now. David might’ve gone on his mission fully intending to pick up where he left off when he gets back, but even he has no way of knowing how he’ll feel in 2014 or where life will take him.

That said, I’m not going to avoid sites or “unfollow” anyone because their way of handling things is to count down. If it works for them, that’s great, to each his own. Full disclosure: I did include a “Welcome Home” monthly countdown widget on SnowAngelz (I don’t “watch” it, however, I actually forgot it was there until your post, lol), so I really hope you don’t stop visiting because of that. I put it up because that’s exactly what I hope to do in 2014 … welcome David back with open arms to whatever awaits him… and us.

    • Ya, I know it’s silly, maybe I have a thing with numbers? idk, but even a mere mention of how long it’s been pulls me into that negative space and out of the moment. I’m not unfollowing friends and sites because I don’t agree with their way of handling it. it’s because it just puts me in a place I don’t care to be in…makes sense?

tbh, I didn’t notice one on your site, now I will, LOL!

  4. Thank you Janey for the great post. Everyone handles the wait game differently. To me enjoying all of David’s sites and looking forward to goodies that are posted is my way of making the waiting game go by faster.

BTW, I know it’s a long time away, but I’m so excited about the fan buzz that will start when it gets closer to the new album being released.

  5. That’s an interesting thought. Before David left, I wondered what it would be like when he’s not around. Now I realize that it’s not exactly very different. I still re-watch interview videos, listen to AI performances, squee over Forevermore, speculate about the new album, and lurk on FanScene.
The only thing missing are his tweets, but Kari does a pretty good job of keeping us updated.
You’re absolutely right about living in the present. Much as I’m looking forward to 2014, I’m looking forward to reminiscing about how awesome these past 4 years were. It’s enough for a lifetime!

  6. I have not been counting. I thought I would but if I count anything it will be months. I don’t even know if I will be able to do that. I have been keeping very busy and doing some things to fill up my life with meaningful stuff. I have some days when I feel sad and I am not sure why because I am so happy for him to be doing this mission. I am definitely taking each day at a time and trying to not think too far ahead.

  7. I haven’t been counting days, though I do occasionally see people tweet how many are left. Sometimes, like a couple of days ago, I do look back and think about how much time has passed. I honestly don’t feel like it’s passing too slowly, especially with the idea of a new album coming out in just a few months. I feel like 2012 just arrived, and now, it’s almost over. Maybe it’s just where I am in life that makes time pass by a little quickly.
