Thumb through David Archuleta’s Twitter and it says there, @DavidArchie “I’m David. I like music”. Those words right there are a clear understatement. David has proven that he doesn’t just like music HE LOVES IT.
Though the Utah boy did not win the ‘Idol’ title during its 7th season, David has stood above the rest with his stage presence and boyish charisma, not to mention, his unique vocals and flawless performance all which undoubtedly makes him an ‘Idol’ in the music world!
The first time Filipino audiences were impressed by David’s live vocals was in May of 2009 when he performed with Season 7 winner David Cook to an estimated crowd of 80,000 or more at SM Mall Of Asia. Two years might as well have been two seconds for this musical boy wonder because it was as if nothing changed, the compassion and love for David Manila audiences showed three years ago was still very much present at his concert last July 18 2011 at the Araneta Coliseum.
The crowd at his concert was full of wildly cheering fans. The show started with young pop singer Julie Ann San Jose as the opening act. She performed four songs which showcased her versatility singing tunes from Nicki Minaj, Paramore, etc.
Bouncing with electricity Season 7 ‘Idol’ Runner-up David Archuleta came on stage with high-spirits and a perpetually happy grin on his face. Bursting with excitement, David greeted the crowd with a ‘Hello Manila!’, The concertgoers reacted with incessant screams and applause. He then captivated the audience composed mostly of his hard-core Pinoy fans with his distinct energy, singing ‘Stomping the Roses’, a light-pop rock song from his third studio album, ‘The Other Side of Down’. The rest of the night was a slew of his peppy, sugary, bouncy hits from the aforementioned music compilation.
Proving his versatility and confidence onstage was when the charming pop sensation played Vanessa Carlton’s A Thousand Miles. The singer said that the tune reminded him of his mom. He lost track mid-song, stopped, then played harder with the audience singing along. “You guys just make me freeze,” he joked.
David also performed his American Idol Hollywood week song piece ‘Heaven’, a song originally done by Bryan Adams, with what can only be described as a bucketful of emotions! Another great cover which added spice to the night was Daniel Bedingfield’s Gotta Get Through This.
Though he is more known as a pop singer Archuleta proved that he could rock too when he performed a Tears for Fears original, ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’, with a catchy pop-ballad arrangement!
But as expected it was David’s hit tunes that drew the most screams like the velvety Touch My Hand,” from his 2008 self-titled debut album. Archuleta capped off his third Manila concert with his biggest hit to date “Crush”.
Undeniably, every time this 20-year old singer-songwriter visits our country David always gives remarkable performances with his superb voice, strong stage presence and boyish grin that can make any girl turn into mush- and have an instantaneous crush.
