Hanna sent in this wonderful essay to Fan Scene:
Hi there, Hanna here. I was wondering if I could send you guys an essay I wrote about David. During English class, my teacher gave us an assignment to write an essay on our favorite hero and of course, I chose David. It is five paragraphs long and it was graded 28/30. She wants me to send it in for my school magazine. So I was wondering if I could post it up here too.
My Favourite Hero
By Raihanna Azwar
Everyone has their own personal hero to look up to in life. It could be your mum, your dad, your neighbourhood fire fighter, your teacher or even the war veteran living down the street. My hero, however, is David Archuleta. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking : “Oh my gosh! Her favourite singer is her hero? How… typical, boring.” Well, it’s fine if you can’t understand why he’s my hero but let me tell you that I truly am awe-inspired by him.
Despite his fame on American Idol, best-selling albums, sold-out tours and adoring fanbase, he still manages to stay level-headed and humble. He treats everybody with a great sense of respect, and I think that that is most definitely an admirable trait. He stays true to his roots and is grateful for all the blessings in his life. At the tender age of 20, he is wise beyond his years. His intentions are pure and his words are genuine and spoken with utmost sincerity.
He has taught me to persevere and believe in myself, no matter how hard life can knock you down. When he was about 14-years-old, he was diagnosed with vocal paralysis. One of his vocal cords was (and still is) idle and paralysed, making it difficult for him to sing more than two verses. He even had difficulty breathing. That was the end, he first thought to himself. His dreams of pursuing a singing career seemed to go down the drain. In spite of this, he practiced and practiced; going through vocal therapy to get his voice back in shape. He persevered, he didn’t give up and he made it. I have learned from him that no matter how many obstacles we have to go through to reach success, we must remain adamant and strong. And now look where he is; his dreams came true.
Futhermore, he inspires me to make a difference in this world. Archuleta has such a charitable, generous heart and it shines through. He supports various charities, such as Rising Star Outreach, Crush MS, StandUp2Cancer, Children’s Miracle Network, Angels For A Cause, Make-a-Wish Foundation, DoSomething.org and many more. He also supports animal-related organisations like National Geographic’s Make An Uproar, which was set up to protect big cats around the world Recently, he went to Chennai, India to visit a leprosy colony. He assisted the doctors with their work and inaugurated the Pathway of Hope, a granite lined pathway created with motivational inscriptions from us, the fans. Photos showed him washing an old man’s foot, documenting an old lady’s blood pressure and playing around with kids; all with a beaming smile on his face.
He has motivated me to help others and speak from the heart. When he gives a speech, you can tell that he speaks with wisdom and passion. What boggles my mind is how mature he is for his age. He is incredibly down-to-earth and would rather stay at home in Murray, Utah with his family than go out clubbing every Saturday night. Words can’t possibly sum up the many lessons I have learnt from just being a loyal fan. It is not how he looks or how he sings that has captivated me; it’s his heart and soul. Although underrated, David Archuleta is a rare gem in today’s society. I respect him for all that he is. I’ll be forever be a fan of his.
