Hi Fan Scene Readers!!So, I’ve been following David’s escapades (thanks to Fan Scene) as he promotes TOSOD via radio interviews, tv performances etc., and based upon several of those interviews, beginning with one on B98.7 in Salt Lake City on 9-21-10, I’ve been thinking, and consequently, I’ve truly come to understand the concept behind the book “Why Men Are from Mars, Women Are From Venus” by John Gray, Ph.D. During the course of that particular interview, David described what he had thought the process of performing in concert was all about as only David can lol. He said something to the effect that there is a performer on the stage with a light shining on that person; that he/she performs and once the performance is over…(to his way of thinking, anyway lol), the light disappears and the performer exits the stage and that’s pretty much it… David explained that he really hadn’t expected anything more to happen after a show was over… so, relative to David’s way of thinking – we, as audience members, go to a show to see/hear the performer(s), we enjoy the show, we go home – end of story lol!!
While maybe this is true to a man’s way of thinking (or in this case, to a young man’s way of thinking) – that
basically represents the perspective from which a man sees it…or at least that’s what I’ve been thinking… See Page 16 “Men Are from Mars, Women Are From Venus”: “A man’s sense of self is defined through his ability to achieve results.” I guess that in this case – singer performs, concert is over, audience has enjoyed it and leaves happy – positive result achieved!! Hold on…not so fast lol!!! From the persepective of a female, this is not the case because the female of the species becomes emotionally involved and attached, David… it’s just the way we are… it’s our nature – it’s part of who we are…it’s in our DNA!! See Page 18 “Men Are from Mars, Women Are From Venus”: “A woman’s sense of self is defined through her feelings and the quality of her relationships,” So, David – as time continues to pass and the number of girls – young and older who are screaming your name before, during and after one of your performances continues to grow larger and larger, you will have learned from that invaluable piece of information (hopefully…lol)… Get used to it, David – what is…is and you are not just a singer standing under a spotlight who performs and then exits stage left (or stage right, as the case may be)…You are David Archuleta – singer, songwriter extraordinaire and all around good person admired by mass numbers of people world wide!!
Every time I watch a video of David on Fan Scene during the course of one of those previously mentioned interviews, I realize all over again just how unique he is. In that same interview with staff from B98.7 – when he was asked about dating and holding hands, for example – he said “I’m not into holding hands…I don’t know…I still think that’s gross…”… He continued on to say, however, “I never liked the idea because there’s never been anyone that I felt I wanted to hold their hand.” So, I was thinking, once again, that this kind of reminded me of Julia Roberts way of thinking in her portrayal of Julianne in the movie “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (a very funny and entertaining movie, in case you haven’t seen it – especially the “I Say A Little Prayer” scene)… Anyway, in the movie, Julianne realized that she had fallen in love with her “best friend” of nine years when he calls to tell her that he is getting married – to someone else, of course!! She had been “commitment phobic” and didn’t care for all that “yucky love stuff” – in this case, until it was too late lol!! So, in this particular instance, I’m thinking that “holding hands” might just be the equivalent of all of that “yucky love stuff”… until just the right person comes along and, I believe that based upon David’s remarks – that would definitely change when he finds the girl who is his kind of perfect – you know, when he finds the girl who causes his heart to skip a beat when his eyes meet her eyes lol!! No more concerns about “holding hands” and that “yucky love stuff” then I’d be willing to bet – that’s for sure!!!
David, in his self-proclaimed “dorkiness” fails to understand why that “dorkiness” and his very, what I like to call “uniqueness” (is that a word – don’t know lol), endears his fans to him and makes us want to do crazy things… take for example, that whole Season Seven American Idol finale thing – I voted for our David on average of 200 times or more per voting night (sometimes falling asleep with the phone in my hand lol)… On
the morning of the finale, I was confident, just brimming with optimism and enthusiasm…yet, that evening, I had a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when I heard Simon apologize to David Cook for the disparaging remarks that he had made about his performance of “The Time of My Life” the night before – color me crazy, but I thought “uh, oh – something not so good is up” and that comment by Simon, in my opinion, didn’t bode well for our beloved David… With that unnerving thought in mind – I just couldn’t bear to see the look on our David’s face if things did not go as I felt that they should – I just couldn’t do it – so I sat on the floor in the middle of my kitchen far away from the tv as the winner was announced… When that fateful moment came, I was in utter disbelief – then I cried like a baby – I couldn’t sleep at all that night – I “imagined” that our David was as heartbroken as I was (I guess for future reference, I should stop imagining such things lol)… Early the next morning, as I went through the motions of getting ready to go to work – one of my best friends called me simply to ask if I was okay – she knew how devastated I must be… but, I was more than devastated – I was extremely upset (to put it mildly), incredulous and inconsolable!! Now, you’re probably wondering where all this is leading… well, because I work at the Board of Elections in the county where I live, I’m used to the fact that candidates for public office who lose in very close races often ask for recounts of the results of such races – well, in the case of our David, I wanted to see the actual results of the voting for the winner of Season Seven of AI, yup, I wanted to see the actual results announced by Ryan Seacrest at that finale in writing – on paper – I wanted to know just what the parameters of the Freedom of Information Act were lol!!! I just couldn’t comprehend, how, when I knew that there were so many people just like me who had voted in numerous multiples of 100 times or more per evening for our David – that this could possibly happen at all – let alone by 12 million votes – I wanted to demand a recount (and at times, I still do lol), but, I realize that David was just so happy in his own “Davidness” – he was happy just to be there doing his thing – the thing that he loves the most – to sing – and that is what mattered to him – he was, and is, happy with what he has (and, of course, unbeknownst to me at the time – he had a record deal that very evening subsequent to the finale – hooray) – and so, a recount?? That would be so un-David-like – that is something David just would never ask for nor would he want me to ask for one that’s for sure lol!!! And so, I must accept the truth as I know it, and that truth must set me free (well, eventually, anyway…lol)!!
I really don’t know just how to explain this effect that David has on people such as myself… and, I honestly
don’t think that David understands it either… As I said in an email that I sent nominating David for any Teens Choice Award that I could possibly think of this year: “I honestly believe that if David was crossing a street and a bus was about to hit him head on (God forbid!!), one of his fans would push him out of the path of that bus putting her/himself in its’ path and in harms way in order to save him!! I know that I would!!”… Maybe it’s because in the Billboard Live Q&A, when a fan tweeted this question to David: “…what else do you hope to achieve in life…?”, part of his response was as follows: “…I worked hard…I did my best…I made a difference in people’s lives” and he continued on to talk about the importance of helping people to feel their self-worth… I guess it’s simply a compilation of all of these things that leads me to say that there’s just “Something ‘Bout David” – and that despite his “dorkiness” “geekiness”, “nerdiness”, or whatever he calls it – David is just all David all the time… true to himself and wonderful and so I say, here’s to you, David!!! And, David, just so you know – we, your fans are in this adventure of yours for the duration and we know that, like you, we’re in for the ride of our lives!! Thank-you for TOSOD and thank-you for being you!!

Thanks for this beautiful article! I remembered every second of the finale when I was reading it. I felt just like you, and my fiends were also callling me the next day to see how I was doing. But in the end, everything happens for a reason and I pray for a long and succesful career for David, so that he continues spreading his magic gift with all of us. TOSOD is amazing! I think of David as the Angel of Pop, because of his kind heart and beautiful soul. He is different, and I admire him for not going for what is popular in today’s music industry. Bravo David!!!!

Hi Ana!!
Thank you for your kind words – isn’t it amazing how we can remember that finale night as if it was just last night – Angel of Pop – what a great way to describe David!! He is an angel in every sense of the word…he has been such an inspiration to me as you undoubtedly can tell – As far as I am concerned, David is a shining example of all that is good in this crazy world of ours!!! Hooray for David!!!

Sharon, what a well thought out article. I especially liked the analogy to “Men are From Mars, Wome are From Venus” Hopefully David will read it and get to understand where his female fans and their ideas are coming from!

Hi Awestruck!!
I am totally awestruck when it comes to our David lol – and sometimes, I’ve been known to be speechless – The book “Men Are From Mars, Women Are from Venus” is truly very insightful – I’ve certainly learned a lot from it – I’m so glad that you enjoyed the analogy – makes sense, doesn’t it?? And, let it be known that we female fans are definitely a force to be reckoned with, but only in a good way lol !!

Sharon, I also hope David gets to read your article, it is a beautiful gift for him. Thank you for pointing out the reasoning differences between the male and female, it makes perfect sense now why David doesn’t understand why his fans care enough to follow him. Even though we as females are relational, I have NEVER followed an artist or celeb before and I’m still not sure why I have developed this obsession at this time. I think that is also part of David’s uniqueness, that he has drawn so many of us out of our comfort zones into this crazy fandom.

Hi Kimbee!!
I have never followed an artist or celebrity in the way I have David either – it’s sometimes almost beyond belief, but if you are anything like me at all – and I’m thinking that you just might be lol – we just can’t seem to help ourselves when it comes to how we feel about him – let’s face it – David rocks!!

Sharon g: Thank you so much for stating so beautifully what David’s fans felt during the final night of American Idol. I can’t remember a time when I took such a voting so seriously. I, too, was upset. Maybe David doesn’t understand that most of his fans love him not only for his great voice, but because of his honesty, truthfulness and humility. He is such a beautiful young man, inside and out. Someday, as he matures, he will realize that his persona is very unique and unlike most other performers.

Hi Mary Lou!!
There are times, I admit, when I seem to re-live that final night of American Idol (as you can tell from what I’ve written) lol – perhaps, hoping that I will wake up from what was a bad dream -or, possibly what was my worst nightmare lol, but then, I try to put things in their proper perspective as I remember just how wonderfully things have gone for David and just how lucky we are to have such a beautiful soul in our midst – and what an awesome gift he has given us!! I wonder if there can or ever will be anyone quite like him again…I seriously doubt it!! I truly believe that David has a way of bringing out the best in all of us through the terrific example he has set – I am so proud to be a fan of David Archuleta!!!

Thank you for the great article Sharon. Like many other fans, I have never followed a celeb before like I have with David. There’s just something about him that draws people in. I don’t know how to explain my obession to others who are not fans. They either look at me weird or make fun of me when I do. That’s why I like visiting David’s fan sites so much. If anybody understands what I’m going through, it will be my fellow “Archies”. At least with fellow “Archies” , we really don’t have to explain to each other why we are so drawn to David. We already know why. It’s like an unspoken understanding between all of us. I hope that makes sense.

Hi UtArchie!!
It makes total sense – I’ve experienced the very same things – the weird looks – being made fun of…but, when all is said and done, it really doesn’t matter, does it – because, ultimately, we all know that David is one of the very best “gifts” that we’ve ever been given and being an “obsessed” (but, in a good way) David fan is just a small way to show our gratitude for what he has given us – pure joy!!! Remember – we’re all in this together and when you do, thankfully, – it truly is an “unspoken understanding” between all of us!!

Sharon,
Beautiful job on this article. I enjoyed reading it so much and loved the reference about men are from Mars…it really made sense with the way a lot of his female fans…young and young at heart feel…we are very much attached even when he exits the stage. And I felt your pain lurking in the kitchen afraid to hear the results…I can still feel the pit of the stomach moment..and yet David..he was over the moon…happy and proud of his friend David Cook. You wrote a lovely piece and I hope you write more for us to enjoy.

Hi Judith!!
Thank you!! As you can tell, I am a huge fan of David’s and I easily take things to heart as do so many of David’s fans …the final moments of that finale were so painful for us, but looking back on that evening – you are so right, David looked so happy and actually was…and that’s what makes him so unique – and such a rarity that we can’t help but admire and respect him as an artist and as a person…I’m glad that the Mars and Venus reference seems to have helped make our feelings a bit more understandable, too!! It really does make sense when we think about it!!

Sharon, thanks for this great article. It’s very well written. Like you and a lot of his fans, I was quite distraught when David didn’t win. But as David often says, there’s a reason for everything. In this case, I believe that his coming in second place was a lesson in humility for all of David’s fans. David, after all, is like the poster boy for humility. He has always been the picture of graciousness both in his moments of triumph as well as losses. His loss to Cook was a bitter pill to swallow but we were all enriched by it because it allowed us to witness, through David’s many interviews, his genuine surprise and gratitude for having even made it through the first round of Idol.

Hi ozarko!!
Thank you so much!! How true – David is such a perfect example of humility – in light of this – he is someone whom we have come to know and admire…. Through his music and through the example he sets for us as a person – David has taught us valuable lessons – we, too, have learned the importance of graciousness. It is because he is so genuine (and because of his remarkable talent, of course) that we we will be his faithful fans forever!!
