Adam Lambert vs. David Archuleta. Who wins the battle of arguably American Idol’s two best ever?

With another exciting year of American Idol upon us, the question is not who will win, but who won’t win.

The last two seasons of television’s No. 1 show ended with shocking upsets. Lambert and Archuleta both were favored to win but were stunned when Kris Allen and David Cook took home the Idol crown. Perhaps fans assumed Lambert and Archuleta were sure-fire winners and didn’t vote? In the end, it largely didn’t matter.

Both Lambert and “Archie” have enjoyed great success, despite placing second.

Ironically, Lambert and Archuleta have some startling similarities, both in style and performance. Let’s take a closer look at their careers, Idol milestones and speculate about who is the best of the best who didn’t win?

The Auditions
Both Lambert and Archuleta emerged as Idol contenders from Day One. Lambert’s rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody” was flawless, as was Archuleta’s “Waiting on the World to Change.” The judges were more impressed with Archuleta than Lambert, who Cowell noted seemed “too theatrical.”

Lambert: Bohemian Rhapsody
Archuleta: Waiting on the World to Change

Before They Were Stars
Arsenio Hall introduces Archuleta on an episode of CBS’s primetime “Star Search.” A pre-teen Archuleta brought the house down with his version of “Falling,” by Alicia Keys.
Lambert has many pre-Idol performances, but this one where he sings the 4 Non Blondes classic, “What’s Up,” is fantastic, even if he appears to be a bit out of sorts during the performance.

Lambert: What’s Up
Archuleta: Falling

Tender Moment
Lambert first convinced Simon Cowell that he could be a contender for the Idol crown with his performance of “Tracks of My Tears.” Like a good chameleon, Lambert overhauled his look for this performance, looking very mainstream. Archuleta’s “Love Me Tender,” had fans in tears. It was another impressive moment for the teen-ager.

Lambert: Tracks of My Tears
Archuleta: Love Me Tender

The Finale
By the time the finale came, fans were expecting blow-away performances akin to the ones Lambert and Archuleta had consistently demonstrated throughout the season. Lambert and Archuleta didn’t disappoint. In some notes, their voices sound remarkably similar.

Lambert: Mad World
Archuleta: Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me

Handling Defeat
Lambert and Archuleta both took defeat well. It almost appeared as though they were expecting it. By the look on his face, Kris Allen clearly thought Lambert was going to win, and David Cook was overwhelmed by his triumph over Archuleta

Lambert: Lambert’s loss
Archuleta: Archuleta heartbreak

Post Idol
Music videos don’t mean much these days; the evolution of youtube means anyone can be a star at any time, even with poor production values. But Lambert and Archuleta both made strong statements about the direction of their careers with their debut music videos, (even if Archuleta, curiously keeps a safe distance from the rest of actors in his video).

Lambert: For Your Entertainment
Archuleta: Crush

Who’s the best of the best who didn’t win?

    DAVID ARCHULETA
    and
Lambert should NOT be in the same sentence!! Two TOTALLY different people, two TOTALLY different singers and two TOTALLY different worlds!! Just in the picture used for this post is an indication as to how different they are. Personally I find THAT picture offensive and should not be on this site. Sorry call me a prude, a square I really don’t care, but that is NOT David. It belongs on Lamberts site.

I do not think that they had anything in common as American Idol contestans. The only similarities between the two is the fact that they both ended up being the Runner Up to the American Idol winner. That is it!!

I know, I know this is all “good buzz” for David, but I still don’t like the two names together. They represent very different worlds!!

Well you know how I REALLY feel about this!!  (Quote)

  3. I saw this article online earlier on Friday, and I was a bit puzzled by it. The writer says that Adam and David “have some startling similarities, both in style and performance” and that, “In some notes, their voices sound remarkably similar.” Really??? I don’t see that at all. It’s interesting how many different perspectives are out there, I guess…  (Quote)

Anyone who saw HispanicBusiness.com’s top Idol performances countdown could see that they are Adam Lambert fans. The only reason I can see for them trying to hold Adam in the same light as David is to see if some of David’s shine would fall on Adam.
    Ain’t gonna happen. :P   (Quote)

A very strange comparison…what a stretch…like comparing apples to oranges, isn’t it? I like that term used earlier…”David’s shine”… Shine on, David! :)   (Quote)

Attention grabbing headline. On the surface there are grounds for comparison.

Scratch below the surface and the comparison becomes a roller coaster of contrasts.

LOL Cutter12 – Good expression – DavidShine! Who wouldn’t want to bask in that limelight, eh?  (Quote)

The only thing these two have in common is they were runner ups on AI, it stops there. How could anyone compare them outside of that. I agree “shine on” David.  (Quote)
