David Archuleta: ‘Music Has Been a Blessing’

by Carole Keeney Harrington / Parade.com
published: 12/09/2009

spotlight-david-archuleta David Archuleta enters a fan VIP meet and greet, flashes his sunbeam smile, then sits at a keyboard and sings. When someone asks for a song he’s not sure he can play, Archuleta does it a capella. His soulful tenor, perfect pitch rendition is flawless.

To his fans, Archuleta is perfect – a magical singer they admire for his “heart.” The 18-year-old from Utah has gone far since placing second on American Idol in 2008.

“I certainly don’t see myself as perfect,” he says. “I have my faults. There are plenty of them. I take longer to do things than most people. I forget things a lot. I’m clumsy. I spill my lunch. I think imperfections make us who we are. That’s what makes us unique.”

That, his fans say, is part of his charm. They admire his devotion to family. They donate to his charities – Rising Star Outreach, Lisa Lopes Foundation and Invisible Children – showcased on an umbrella Web site, angelsforacause.org. They even emulate his awkward, “Oh, my heck,” on Twitter, rather than the more common “OMG.”

It’s the music, he says, that made it all possible. His self-titled debut album reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Top 200, his single, “Crush,” sold 1.9 million copies, and his tour hits venues large and small. In September he won an ALMA Award and he’s currently writing and recording his highly anticipated second album.

To promote his latest release, Christmas from the Heart, Archuleta will appear in 19 cities from November 24 through December 20. The album reveals a more sophisticated performer, with the young singer tackling songs in four languages: “Pat-a-Pan” in French; “Riu, Riu, Chiu” in Spanish, “Ave Marie” in Latin; and traditional English hymns.

In New York, when we talked, Archuleta laughed uncomfortably after hearing a quote from 18-year-old fan Emily Brown. She and her sister, Elisabeth, 16, create Archuleta-adoring videos on YouTube.

“Last year I went through a really bad time, and I felt like having David by my side helped me get through it,” Emily said.
