Schrödinger’s Cat: Getting David’s Artistry

My immediate family consists of 14 people:  4 children, 6 grandchildren, 2 sons-in-laws and my sweet Mr. Kizzi.  Of those 14 people 7 of us, yes, 50 percent, are ardent David fans.  The other 50% are in various stages of acceptance of this most joyful and shared (at least by half of us) family adventure.

I think they are actually envious of the connection the 7 of us have and trying to figure how to join us.

My 25 year-old son has been analyzing this joy, that he doesn’t share, quite studiously for over 18 months.  He is a lover of physics and science.

When he was twelve he got a book from the Discovery Channel Store called, “Who’s Afraid of Schrödinger’s Cat?” based on a quantum mechanics theory from Nobel Prize winning Austrian physicist, Erwin Schrödinger, a contemporary of Albert Einstein who traded letters with Einstein on this very theory.

Schrödinger’s premise describes how different perceptions can arisee schrodinger when viewing one of many quantum superpositions (states of being.) His example used a cat (thus the title.) Simply, a quantum superposition is the combination of all the possible states of being.  That “superposition” undergoes “collapse” into a “definite state” only at the exact moment of quantum measurement (the moment of viewing.)

My son claims 7 of us see what he can’t see when viewing David’s artistry due to viewing different states of being on the moment of viewing…as in what the listener/viewer hears and sees when David sings.

My non-David fan daughter saw an interview where David said he was “18, looked like twelve and acted like 14. “ She, herself, refers to David as “that young KID.” My daughter can’t find the reference and neither can I. I do remember something to that effect in one of his interviews.  I am sure someone reading this will have it saved or bookmarked.

I do believe my son and daughter are on to something that they can wrap their minds and feelings around as they continue to find ways to join the other 7 of us on this fabulous David fan journey.  Their quantum superposition that collapses upon viewing David’s artistry revolves around his “age.”  That shapes their observations with assumptions, meanings and conclusions different from ours.  They see and hear something different.

When I see and listen to David, I see this:

When they see and listen to David, they see this:

David Archuleta

My son actually came up with this illustration to explain what is happening:

Or, as my 22-year old son told his older brother after patiently listening to this explanation of the Schrödinger’s Cat Theory coupled with the diagrams of  the “Haves” (David Fans) and “Have Nots” (Non-David Fans) in the family:

“It’s just a matter of taste, bro.”

  1. You are SPOT ON with this. My sister can’t get past the AGE thing. He sings so maturely but looks like a young boy to her. Well, he is a young boy AND HE SINGS MAGNIFICENTLY! It just can’t be helped.

  2. Do me a favor Kizzi- Never invite me over to your house for dinner. I’d be completely and utterly lost! This I get, though.. “It’s just a matter of taste, bro.” lol!

I find it interesting that the non-fans of David spend almost as much time thinking about him as the rest of you do, wondering what they don’t “see” in him that you do. And really.. if your son is actually making illustrations about this phenomenon, then hopefully it’s just a matter of time before he’s a convert as well. ;)

  3. I totally agree it’s an “age” thing. I have two sons, ages 27 and 30 and they don’t “get it” either (nor does my husband, but he’s getting closer due to my badgering). As for some of the younger set of girls not getting him, I liken it to when you’re in high school and won’t date the boys the same age as you…then when you’re a senior in high school and all the older boys have been graduated and there’s nothing left but same age guys all of a sudden they’re looking pretty good, but they won’t date you now cause they’re only dating the younger girls. All the guys eventually get older and definitely more appealing. All those girls are starting to drool over David now that he has “grown up” in “all” ways. And he will only get more and more appealing to the ladies now. As his music grows in maturity and is more what he wants to put out, I think his fanbase, both male and female, will grow also. I do like the “Who’s Afraid of Schrodinger’s Cat” theory and will have my 27-year-old read that book!

  4. Well said Deb – it is true, the “have nots” as Kizzi puts it seem to invest just as much time and energy into trying to explain this phenomena as the “haves”.
I too often hear “he is just a kid”.

Maybe we, the HAVES transverse between parallel universes that cross the space-time continuum and can “hear” what the future has in store for us. The HAVE NOTS are stuck on one plane and cannot see beyond what is in front of them.

or maybe what is, what is…..

WonDERful article Kizzi! You have a fantastic family! 50% is amazing.

(oh and I can now lay to rest my forever never completed article on how David Archuleta is like the String Theory of the Universe. ;) )

  5. Clicking on the Amazon link below — off to buy “Who’s Afraid of Schrodinger’s Cat”!

Mysteriously, big bump up in sales recorded on Nov 23, 2009 (Kizzi should get a kick back ) :D

  6. Spiff the Spaceman will collapse the quantum superposition and give David Archuleta a permanently positive spin with his trusty Atom Blaster!

Loved the article, Kizzi! I think both of your sons are right – at the same time. :D

  7. Funny write up. I have met David and he does seem young (but I think it’s just shyness) when you’re face to face with him. However, once David is on a stage with a microphone in his hand…there is the older side of him shining through with that magnificent voice. I have wondered how a 54 year old like myself feels and acts like 18 again when in David’s presence. In my real life I’m a mature and responsible adult; however, put me in a space anywhere near David Archuleta…and the man makes me forget my name and age. David just makes the world a happier place…he is truly a wonderful person and has drawn so many people together worldwide through his music. Thank you David…you truly are an Angel.

  8. I liked this article, but I had to read that twice to get the gist of it.
I like the spin on it from the perspective of those who have not. Here is just a slightly different spin from my local “Have Nots”

My friend in Arizona said “I think you have a Crush on David Archuleta”.
My sister said “I think you are really obsessed with David Archuleta”
I think both of them wanted to sorta engage me in a battle to see if they could win me over to their side. I disappointed them terribly.
My reply to them was “oh heck ya I’ve got a huge crush on him, and I am not the only oldie like me who does.”
And “you have no idea how obsessed I am with him”

Well that was just like a “shut my mouth” for them, they had no comeback. It was funny to watch them stumble for the next argument and there was none because I agreed with them.

I have decided only a few people get free rent in my head. Jesus is the first one and David is one of the top 3 on my list. And even I have to kick David out sometimes. (not and easy thing to do)

  9. Thanks everyone for your comments. Since David is always a topic when our family gets together, we have had many fun and interesting discussions between the “haves” and “have-nots” coined by my son who feels he is missing out because he doesn’t “get” what we “haves” get.

Deb – you’d love dinner at our house – their is always a place at our table for a fellow David fan :)

Pattie & Patty-Ann – the age thing is crazy; I never look at age when I look at art; for others, it is a significant part of their appreciation

AFD – Yes, the String Theory – segues into this topic beautifully ;)

AFS – We should all carry an Atom Blaster. :) My older son is an inveterate analyzer and philosopher and younger son is Mr. Black and White, keep it simple – two opposite ends of the continuum when looking at life.

TrudyFOD – “…David just makes the world a happier place…he is truly a wonderful person and has drawn so many people together worldwide through his music…” AMEN

Dorothy – LOL, “…free rent in your head…” Never heard that one before. Great short list.

  11. Kizzi! This was wonderful! The contrasting perception with the 2 photos of David made me laugh and nod my head. Really enjoying your totally original and “random” (in the absolute best sense of the word) articles here on AFS.
