The word "Christ" has been abbreviated in English for a thousand years; as far back as AD 1021, "Christ" was often written with the Greek letters X (chi) and P (rho) fused together. X (symbol for Christ, from the Greek letter <em>chi</em> (X), initial of <em>Christos</em> Christ) + -mas (in Christmas). So, the abbreviation doesn't bother me. It's just a throw-back to an old language. But whenever I see the word 'Xmas,' I don't pronounce the X as 'eks-məs,' but read it 'kris-məs.'
