david archuleta

Honduras celebrates Independence Day on Sept 15. During our recent Labor Day holiday, David Archuleta, along with mother and sisters, was able to spend some time in California with the family of one of his Honduran aunts. Abuelita was also able to spend some precious time with David and many of her other grandchildren.

David and Abuelita both proudly stood for photos in front of the Honduran flag.

Honduras Independence Day History

Christopher Columbus reached the coast of Honduras on his fourth and final expedition to the New World in 1502. Honduras became an addition to Spain’s vast empire in the New World. With the discovery of gold, the region turned into the center of armed struggle for many years. Lempira, a Native American chief defied the Spaniards and gave them considerable headache and setbacks in their conquest of the region.
The fight for independence was spearheaded by Francisco Morazán. On September 15 1821, Spain granted independence to Honduras along with the rest of the Central American provinces.

Honduras Independence Day Traditions, Customs and Activities

In Honduras, the people celebrate Independence Day passionately. Schools and colleges stay closed for the celebrations and children participate enthusiastically in music and dancing. Independence Day is marked by three days of celebrations.

    :-)

I wondered what the symbolism was for their flag so I just looked it up:

“The blue bars of the Honduras flag signify the waters that border the country–the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The five stars represent the countries that were bound together as the Federal Republic of Central America in the 1820s. The members were Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and El Salvador.”

Papi Will (David’s Grandpa from Mom’s side) and I, along with some family and friends, celebrated the Central American Independence in Miami.
