I have a story to tell everybody, gather ’round and hear my tale. A story of a young man who was a fan of David Archuleta. Now in those times it was highly looked down upon for a man to be a fan of David Archuleta. (About two months ago) Why? Don’t ask me, ask everybody who gave him the stink eye every time he walked by. Even worse when he had headphones in his ears….. Okay so the story teller theme is getting a little strange, so let’s change it up a bit. I have a question for you, has anyone ever cocked their eyebrow or made a face that looked like they smelled something really bad. All because you said you were a fan of David’s? I have. It all started in the beginning of sophomore year. Fan’s teacher gave the class an assignment to bring any song you want to have the class listen to. Then they would try to think of what the lyrics meant to the song.

“Make sure the lyrics have meaning!” cried the teacher as the class sprang out of their seat to the bell ringing. As the class left, Fan talked to the teacher.

“Teacher,” he said, his voice nervous,”Do you mind if I bring David Archuleta’s song ‘Angels?” The teacher welled up with excitement at the sound of this.

“Oh! David Archuleta, the one from American Idol? He’s a cute one that one,” she said with a wink, putting her hands on her face. She looked as if she was dreaming.

“Yeah, he’s a great singer,” said Fan making calm down motions with his hands “Oh, he’s only seventeen teacher,” said Fan with a smile. The excitement on the teacher’s face faded a bit.

“Yes, it’s fine Fan, go ahead,” she said turning around to the whiteboard, her cheeks still red with excitement. Fan walked out of the classroom, several things running through his head. The class was going to all like the song, should he choose “Angels?” Why did the teacher wink at him? He shook his head trying to clear it. The last thought he didn’t want to think about anymore.

The next morning came quickly. Fan got ready and grabbed his David Archuleta Cd and was out the door. The school was ever busy when he got there. Fan usually didn’t mind the crowds, this morning that was very different though. Walking through the school he noticed people looking at him in a strange way. Some whispered to the friend next to them, while looking at Fan. Some looked at him with a look of disgust. Fan looked around wondering why people were looking at him, then he heard it.

“He listens to that guy from American Idol, but he’s a dude,” said a girl with sharp features and long blond hair. Suddenly Fan wasn’t feeling so confident about sharing his song in class. Third period came almost too soon, the other kids from the class filed into the class room. Fan was the last to walk in, his Cd now in his bag. He knew it had already started, as a few guys looked at him with smirks. The girl with blond hair was in the class, she looked at him, gave a smile that looked forced, then looked at the teacher. Person after person shared their song. Fan heard artists like Tupac, Lil Wayne, and 50 Cent. Fans Cd was totally different from those people’s Cd. What were they going to say? Why did Fan choose this song?

So let’s stop the story there, I’m sure you all know what happened next?….. No, they didn’t like it, their loss if you ask me. I’m sure you all know who Fan was in the story. So I’ll ask the question again. Has there ever been a time when people reacted in strange ways when you said you were a Fan of David’s? Fan’s main problem in the story was people making assumptions that guys can’t listen to David’s music. If I could give him anything, I would give him this shirt.

I would so wear that at school.

Awww Joey, this post makes me heart hurt. I don’t get why it’s soo uncool to listen to David. It’s hard enough being a “mom” fan, because people think you’re too old to listen to him, but it’s harder to be a male fan because apparently David’s music isn’t “manly” enough. *shakes head sadly*  (Quote)

Andrea- She’s hinting that maybe Fan agrees with her. She’s trying to get something out of him.
Debbie- It’s annoying isn’t it? Music is for everybody. Young, old, male, or female. David’s music is such a blessing, isn’t it?  (Quote)

  4. Great story, Joey. HS kids can be brutal to kids who aren’t in their “clique.”

I don’t have a DA t-shirt, but if I did, I’d wear it proud . Well, unless it was one of those pink, flowery ones from the Mall, haha. Then Gallie would laugh at me, haha! ;) Soooo, it would have to be black. Okay…maybe Navy blue. And David would have to look a tad less smiley than usual. A bit more brooding perhaps – and an edgy font would be cool, maybe like tribal. Yeah – I’d wear that, lol. :)   (Quote)

Hey FAN! Having not yet gotten over the disgusted look I got from a 17 year old girl at the SLC concert, I feel your pain! I think we will all have the last laugh someday however. “You liked him when he was young? KEWWWLLL!”  (Quote)

Since when am I going to have people tell me what kind of music to listen to. I know what I like and I tell the world… actually shout it out…. I love David Archuleta! Say it proudly. Stop and listen to some of the stuff spewing out over the airwaves. Pure junk compared to David’s music and voice. He made me love music again. I can’t think of another soul who has that honor. Go, David!  (Quote)

Dear fan..I just went to a Jonas brother concert with my daughter, there was not ONE male in the crowd. I am serious except a few dads and a couple boyfriends.. There are TONS of men at David’s concerts, his music is loved by men, women, children, etc.. and did you know that in the old rock and roll days, no girls were in the audience, not until 80′s glam rock did that start to happen, and mostly because the boy rockers started to look like women. many many times people listen to music only to follow the crowd but ‘you’ are cut from a different cloth–you are a real man and you stand up for your likes and dislikes. I applaud you for still playing David, I would have lost cd before I got to class, ha ha.. you are one brave man! I am rambling, but I know what I mean.. The jonas brothers are boys, they play to girlie girls and it shows, David plays from his soul and all ages and sexes are at his shows.. Your highschol class was just busy staying in the ‘status que’ that your school had conformed them to,, but YOU stood up for yourself and in the years to come at your high school reunion you will be a successfull business man and the kids in your class will be still acting like highschoolers  (Quote)

  9. To the Young and Wise Male Fan, I salute you.

I would be interested to like “put a face to the name” of this fine young male fan.. I would be glad to back you up..

… Smile amidst the smirks – let it not affect you. It is human nature – we can’t avoid that – it happens all the time. We have the so-called typecast, clique or the social pretending class. At one time, when they asked me, what music was I listening mostly at: I said – DAVID ARCHULETA’s music – and so they asked bit interested and others moaned – for i dunno the reasons. But hey, it is what I like – it is about the Freedom to choose what you love to hear. Am a fan of music – I have a library of music from the 70′s to the present – am young though.

If it did happen to me “a male fan” – huh? – I’d be proud to say I like Archuleta’s music too. And witness DA’s success in the years to come and will come back at them to say, “I TOLD YOU SO” – oh, ok this is a bit childish and I apologize..

I know – High School is challenging especially for a person in his/her teen-age formative years. We crave for a Sense of Belonging and yearn for a approval from our co-high school peeps. It is in this stage where normally social class identification occurs – as to which type of perks you’d choose to belong that would make you cool in general ..

Again, I salute you fine young DA male fan.
Pay little attention to those who looked down on you for liking DA’s music – it is their loss not yours.

Enjoy and grow with DA’ music and
Let Nature Takes Its Course – Somebody Out There is Helping David Archuleta and He’s Doing It One Step At A Time..
    This I guarantee..
Tell them David Archuleta’s Fans will not forsake him either.  (Quote)
