A Year in the Life of a David Archuleta Fan

OK, so it hasn’t quite been a year, but I just couldn’t wait until early August to write this. I was just thinking about all of the goofy, funny, flaky things that David has said and realized that I’ve been privileged to be the recipient of quite a few of them, so I thought I’d share them with you.

It all started on August 9th, 2008, at the buses for the AI Live show. people squished together vying for a good spot; you remember the drill.

Me: “Here David” (I hand him a gift bag)
David: “Oh, is this for me????? thanks!!!”
*David then signs a picture and the arm of my t-shirt*
My friend Robin: “green is your color”
David: “Oh, I don’t know anything about colors. My shirts all come from Target.”

Next up, Providence AI Live show, September 7th, 2008. We got backstage passes *SQUEEEEE* David is standing in a corner, signing stuff. My friends are on the couch in front of him. I’m almost last in line.

Me: “Hey David! I wear a ONE band too, so I was wondering if we could do a sort-of serious pose with our bands?”
David: “Oh, ummmmmmmm”
*David hems and haws and then decides we should make fists and hold them up*
*David has to wipe the smile off his face*

*my friends take the picture*
Me: “I don’t think I was serious enough”
David: “I was!”
I have a few gifts and a few cards for him, one that I ask him to open right then.
My friend Oy: “Carla, is my name on there?” (there was one card that everyone signed; not this card though)
David: *looks at Oy* “your name?”
Oy: “Oy”
*David looks at me*
Me: “no”
Oy: “Carla put my name on there!” (she thought it was the card from all of us)
David: “oh. um. what’s your name?” *David gets out his sharpie*
Oy: “O.Y. It’s Oy.”
*David writes her name on my card*
Me: (to my other friends and Oy) “honing in on my card!!!!”
*David holds up the card for Oy to see her name, then looks at me and a lightbulb goes off in his head*
David: “Oh. No?” *David crosses out Oy’s name*
We crack up.

Worcester radio lunch, October 28th, 2008. probably my favorite interaction with David because of his flakiness. David is sitting at a table, signing stuff and chatting with fans. I’m second to last in line – Deb is last.

Me: “Hi David!!!!”
David: *random singing* “hey!”
*David signs this 8×10 of himself for me*
*more random singing*
David: “I’m sorry I keep singing”
Me: “Don’t stop on our account – we love to hear you sing!”
Me: “David I have something for you” and I handed him a thumb drive. “Have you heard of Jem?”
David: “Jem?”
Me: “Right, Jem. She’s my favorite female singer/songwriter right now and I think you’ll like her”
David: “Oh, is she from around here?”
Me: “No, she’s from Wales”
David: “Oh, cool!!”
David: “Jen?”
Me: “No, Jem with an em”
David: “Jem, Jem, Jem, Jem, Jem, Jem”
Me: (wondering if he’s gone somewhere else in his head entirely and is completely bored with this conversation) “Do you want to see a picture of her?”
David: “Yeah!”
*we talk about Jem until the mean Jive lady tells me it’s time to hurry things up* At the very end of the lunch, David was eating pizza, so Deb and I walked over to him.

David: “This is only the second time I’ve ever had pizza”
Me and Deb: “huh????”
David: “This is only the second time I’ve ever had pizza”
Deb: “You’ve only had pizza twice in your life? that’s not possible”
David: “oh, no. I meant that we’ve had pizza at practically every radio lunch but this is only the second time I’ve had a chance to eat it.
*Lightbulbs go off in Deb and my heads*

Boston radio breakfast, October 29th, 2008. I didn’t win a ticket to get in, but I hung out in the lobby with a few other fans. When Jeff, David and the Jive people came up, we talked a bit.

David, to all of us: “Do I have something in my teeth? I feel like I have something in my teeth” and he showed us his teeth.
Me: “no, you’re good.”
