Idol Chatter: Is Adam Lambert This Year’s David Archuleta?

adam lambertHE’S ONE OF “American Idol’s” most lauded contestants. He came pre-loaded with serious stage experience and he even had a measure of success with his singing before he auditioned.

Once on the show, he was recognized at once as a tremendous talent and received constant waves of praise from the judges — except for occasional, predictable jabs by Simon.

The ladies love him — and some of the guys do, too. He’s humble and self-effacing in interviews and appears to get along well with his fellow contestants and pretty much everyone else.

He was predicted for weeks to have a lock on the “Idol” title.

Who did I just describe? If the topic is “American Idol” season seven, it’s David Archuleta. But step forward a year. Don’t all of the attributes listed above also fit Adam Lambert?

Despite high expectations, David Archuleta didn’t win “American Idol.” Adam Lambert might not, either. And if he doesn’t, it’ll be for many of the same reasons.

Throughout season seven, Li’l David was hailed as the Idol-in-waiting — it was only in the final weeks that the eventual winner, David Cook, began to outshine him. Even then, though, many a reviewer — even yours truly — still thought Li’l D would come out ahead.

david archuletaHere was the problem: Li’l David sang songs that, for all their pure vocal charisma, didn’t reach as wide an audience as David Cook’s.

You could say it’s because Li’l David was more defined as an artist than David Cook was: Cook was a general studies rocker; Li’l David — if you look at his “American Idol” catalogue — geared more toward uplifting, inspirational songs. David Cook’s songs ran the gamut, but were almost always radio-friendly tweaks that made even dusty old songs — Lionel Ritchie’s “Hello,” for example — seem current.

Adam has Cook’s tune-tweaking talent, too — in fact, I think his song repair shop provides higher-quality service than Cook’s did. But where he aligns more with Archuleta is in his nicheiness.

Adam’s song choices are, to be sure, more interesting than Li’l David’s were — and you’d think that the combination of masterful pipes and songsmithy derring-do would be unbeatable. But the chink in Adam’s armor is also his most powerful asset: his style. Some call it showtuney, some call it “Broadway,” some, like Simon, call it occasionally over-the-top.

Some absolutely love it. But Adam’s approach can be so strong, so heavy-handed that it drives away some listeners even as it coaxes others in. The best example of this would be his much-discussed version of “Ring of Fire” — but this week’s rendition of U2’s “One” would fall into the same category.

Li’l David was taken down by a contestant who had a great voice and a solid fan base, but whose music and songcrafting skills had a wider appeal. Dude in his mid-20s. Grew up near the Mississippi. Plays a guitar. Also got some serious judge love throughout the competition. Ring any bells in this year’s competition?

A final point: “Wait a minute,” you’d say if you were standing here as I was writing this, “what about Simon? He’s said again and again and again that he thinks Adam’s going to win?”

Turns out, he’s been wrong before.

Maybe Kris Allen isn’t as much of a dark horse as some folks might think.

  1. How can you compare the Adam to David Archuleta? David Archuleta is has an incredible soulful voice (does not scream his songs or wear make or needs theatrical outfits to be an incerdible singer. This is a David Archuleta site, not a comparison site Adam vs. David. No offense but I dislike Adam, too much credit is given to his theatrical performances and it is not the type of CD’s I will be buying in the future and I am an older fan. There is only ONE DAVID ARCHULETA talent and too many theatrical and rock screaming singers.

  3. Just came out from Manila Davids’ concert. My opinion? It’s better to separate the David concerts to each his own. They have different fan base. I had a hard time asking the person in front of me not to stand on top of the chair and block my view when Cook was shouting, I mean, singing. Many Archies including me and my friends went home before Cook’s final 2 songs were done. At least in my area in platinum seats and at the back, maybe gold and silver tickets. According to the promoter, placards are not allowed but I saw many Cook’s placard. I’m taking notes of all the good and bad points that occurred in this concert. And maybe in the near future I’ll ask some financiers to produce a solo concert for David Archuleta here in the Philippines or other Asian countries. But I will wait for his next album or even a Grammy hopefully and we’ll see. American Idol is a reality show rather than a singing contest. After the final two, the judges can promote a person to be the one to beat but actually they like the other one to win. They use reverse psychology for people to bet against the judges supposed favorite. Adam is not like Archuleta but more similar to Cook because they shout a lot. Who knows, Adam may win because the judges like that kind of vocal range. Besides, no one knows who really wins because no one saw the data of the votes.

  4. Let me start by saying that David Cook NEVER EVER outshined David Archuleta!!! As a competitor he tried and so did everyone else in AI Season 7, but failed to do so. As we all know David Archuleta OUTSHINED everyone. He put his signature on every song he sang!!

    Let’s not not compare anyone to David Archuleta. Nobody will EVER come close. Humble and Humility is David’s middle name along with James.

    We can TRY and make a “comparison” but everyone will fall short to be equal!!

    Yes David’s music and song choice were Inspirational and uplifting with exceptional tone and maturity for a 16/17 year old young man, which is what caught everyone’s attention and put him as a front runner.

    David Cook’s songs on the other hand, like you said, were more the radio-friendly old songs with a “ROCK Edge” — “Hello” by Lionel Ritchie. I LOVE Lionel Ritchie’s version better!! I grew up listening to him.

    Lambert is first “A Performer”. He knows how to work the stage and as well he should. He has been in this business all his life, it’s second nature to him. He does have a huge voice, but where I have a problem is how he HAS to show us how loud he can scream and how high he can go. By doing so, it just takes away from the song and sometimes you would forget what the song was all about!! One more thing, THAT tongue has to go back in!!

    Adam is definatley an old style Rocker!! If he were a true Artist he would have never made a “mockery” of “Ring of Fire” and destroyed “One” by U2. Rock is one Genre I do not like!!

    I for one have always said the United States is mainly composed of two Genres, ROCK AND COUNTRY. As you can see by the two — you DON’T need to have amazing vocals or be a true Artist to succeed in any of the two.

    DAVID ARCHULETA is an exceptional Artist vocal galore!!

  5. DAVID ARCHULETA is one of a kind. Why compare SHOUTERS and Theatrics with INCREDIBLE VOCAL PERFECTIONS. I can assure you neither Cook or Adam can sing Angels or the US National Anthem like he does. And they are both in their late twenties and have been practicing for many many years. It takes incredible vocals to be able to do so. Needless to say that incredible humble (not arrogat personality David Archuleta has. I find it really interesting that altough Cook and Adam are promoted more, David Archuleta is still traveling and winning a more diverse fan base. He is now officially an INTERNATIONAL artist. Comparing Adam to David is a real joke. Sorry, no disrespect to Adam or Cook. I will never buy any of their CD’s or listen to their music for hours like I have with DAVID ARCHULETA and I am also an older fan. David Archuleta is very unique. Altough he is a teenager he is still attracting older fans too. GO DAVID you will always be MY AMERICAN IDOL and role model.

  6. NO COMAPRISON to DAVID ARCHULETA’s talent PLEASE! He is ONE OF A KIND FOR SURE. The younger artist with the BIG VOICE! When I saw DAVID ARCHULETA LIVE he left me speechless with his BIG VOICE! AMAZING all I can say watching him was WOW! and needless to say NO ARROGANCE in his performances, just plain fun and energy.

    The US does not consist of just Rock and Country, so get an education in music please before you make stupid remarks without any knowledge. DAVID IS A NEW POP STAR! Not Rock or Country. I find it even more interesting that Cook’s songs are listed under Pop and singing more Ballads than rock. And David is succeeding with more upbeat songs and POP music. For those of you that need an education is musical genres here is the list:

    POP, ROCK & ROLL (LOUDNESS), Country, R & B, Rap, Blues, Jazz, Inspirational, Opera.

    Examples of BIG POP STARS, BEYONCE, Britney Spears, Kelly Klarkson, DAVID ARCHULETA, Jordin Sparks,

    Examples of Rock & Roll, BON JOVI, Bruce Springstein, U2, Daugthry, David Cook’s songs also wannabe Pop, Adam (loudness),

  7. Maybe the writer of this article tried to explained that something similar to what happened to David last year could happened to Adam. A lot of people thought Archie was going to win and it didn’t happened. I agree with Au, we will never know what really happens when they count the votes and what goes on behind the scenes of American Idol. A lot of people believe the show is manipulated; that the producers have the final word about the winner and not the audience voting (I’m one of those people).

    However, putting aside the strategies of the show and this reporter’s opinion, I think David shouldn’t be compared to anybody. I try not to compare and I don’t like David to be compared with any other artist because I believe and feel that David Archuleta is truly unique; he is one of a kind, as an artist and especially as a human being.

  8. Well we all know that AI producers and judges will make sure that Adam wins this year. It is so predictable it is not even funny. But coming back to this, DAVID ARCHULETA’s talent there is no comparison with any of these loud rockers. I will not buy any Cook or Adam CD’s anyway. And what is up with the make up and outfits anyway? Does that make you a better singer? AI is a singing competition not an audition for a musical theatre role. YUK! If I wanted to see theatrics I live in New York, Musical Theatre is close by. When I wanted to listen to an incredible voice and an interesting and unique artist, I will choose DAVID ARCHULETA. David Archuleta has become as some posting here, an international pop singer. How many haters said, he will never be able to sing at his own concert, blablabla. Underestimated the David Archuleta talent for sure. Look at him now. Who is moving around on stage with that incredible voice and having fun and a tremendous connection with the audience, DAVID ARCHULETA! You have to see David Archuleta live to appreciate how more incredible he is LIVE. Only REAL TALENT is such. No screaming, no make up, (Cook used plenty of eyeliner too) Adam is just one plain theater expert since he was 9. Do I choose loudness and theatrical mumbo jumbo? NO that is why DAVID ARCHULETA will end up being a BIGGER STAR than both these guys. After all he is only 18 and look have much he learned in ONE YEAR after being the runner up. Proving again that who cares if you are runner up on AI it is how long you last in this business that matters. GO DAVID ARCHULETA! Let AI control Adam and Cook who cares? Their AI contract does not last that long anyway.

  9. i agree with michelle,au,chinagoAND sandradb, why did lisgro,quit or get fired after cook won!!!!!l dont belive he got the most votes,but not winning was the best for him who is in the news more,david archuletadavid a has benn to aisa europe,and had a us tour what has david cook benn doing i dont know,notheing aganst cook,just doesent have the people behind him,arche made this concert a succes

  12. Thanks Sandra08. DA was good live as I experienced it in Manila concert. Maybe I was seated with Cooklets around my seats. So I see more Cook fans or may assume his fans are more than DA’s in this concert. I think that his fan clubs were more organized, possible with the help of the promoter or demanded by Cook management. After all, Cook is the official winner. I tried hard to watch and appreciate Cook. After all, I paid for the 2 Davids in one concert. Maybe rock fans are less disciplined or maybe they have hearing impairment to hear my request not to stand on the chair and let other people watch the show. Yeah I know, DA came out to support DC to sing Cook’s song together. I just saw it in many blogs. But we rather leave early to avoid trouble with rude people. Besides, it’s a short drama, them singing together. David Archuleta is too kind. Wonder if Cook will do what DA did if it were the other way around. Anyway, I enjoyed the David Archuleta part of the concert.

    NO ONE that will ever be compared to the Archuleta. Simon can search till kingdom comes, Simon can coach, dress someone to try
    to emulate David but it won’t work. David is called to do and be
    who he is. The others are just wandering in the wilderness trying to find out who they are including the writer who started this mumbo jumbo. They are all lost and ignorant to real music. So, take your screaming boys, oops, I’m sorry their almost thirty the both of them Lambert and cook back to singing in the local bars.
    David Archuleta is a master class artist. You can’t touch that!

    You have to handle your jealousy in another way knowing that
    David is a superstar and more bigger than you are there is no reason to hate on him. Sorry, but cook and lambert are wanna bes

  24. Another example of what we’re talking about. Posting an article that is comparing Lambert to David Archuleta Why would you even go there fanscene. This is what we mean in uor previous debate. Excuse us fans of David but these next paragraphs are in reference to a fan who wants a petition for a season 7 DVD. There is nothing wrong with that but being that Andrea admitted that she is more of a cook fan than an Archuelta fan. We Archie fans question her motives. We have been “debating” this issue with fanscene and we are very disappointed to know how fanscene tends to side with one who is not even a true Archie fan and how fanscene has bulllied true Archie fans to the point where they have excluded us from the origianl post this was intended for. Why? because of our intention to speak up against anything or anyone we feel who is demeaning to the character and talents of David Archuleta. This includes cook who they are defensive of.     Andrea – Sarcasm tends to come with the cook package. Everyone knows since the days of season seven, cook fans are harsh and come
    off as bullies. So we understand your given response toward True Archie fans. Archies are to represent David’s Character in a positive way. Your not to “bash” other fellow Archies and support someone with unprofessional verbage toward another Archie fan. Why? because we speak our minds in defense to David’s position.     wisdom and discernment. Joey – we don’t live life under David’s

    the True Archies are quick to respond. Fanscene – you say you put cook first since he won AI. Again, if this is DA’s fansite you only promote him regardless who won and in the eyes and the hearts of the Archie majority David is the True American Idol.
    If the Archies across the globe believe this, Why can’t your fansite have this same attitude for David. Fanscene, Never, Never, Never put anyone ahead of David or you are not one hundred percent there for his benefit. If Andrea admitted that she is more of a cook fan than and Archuleta fan, well that’s a red flag right there. Fanscene, you should question her motives. Screen these people or you will have opened a door to cook fan’s in cognito. Fanscen youor defense to defend Andrea’s positin shows us that you are also cook fans. This explains some of the selection of articles you have chosen to post which we foound to be demeaning and belittling towards Archuleta.
    Andrea – the fansite that you are looking for is the AI site or
    create one from season 7 but don’t intermix mediocre talent next
    to David or bring other characters into David’s turf. Honestly,
    Do you think the fans at the cook fansite would mention Archie? I don’t think so. If they did it would be negative. Fanscene – now
    you have twisted the facts. None of us is bashing anyone nor was it ever our intention. In fact it’s been the other way around. It’s okay we realize we are dealing with cook fans so it’s expected. We are simply True Archie fans truly out for David’s best interest. And fanscene, True Archies are not negative we are merely truly supportive as fans for David. Another Fansite – I’m sure there are many people who would want to experience another fansite that is truly David. I believe God will select that person and raise that fansite up and just may bring yours down.
    Unfortuanately. Especially the way we have been treated from fanscene. It’s not nice to bully others out because we speak the truth and defend David. It’s something crucial that you lack and purposely neglect. Remember, we are also David’s friends. We make it happen for him or he wouldn’t be where he is today as per David. Now we know who you REALLY are and what your about. We will
    continue to monitor what goes on here regarding David.
