American Idol judge Simon Cowell recently told TV Guide it would have to be a miracle if Adam Lambert and Danny Gokey didn’t face each other in this season’s finals.

Even though Cowell seemed to predict a victory by Gokey, he reminded TV Guide’s readers that anything can happen in the finals and used last year’s David versus David showdown to make his point.

When you get into the final, everything changes hugely because now you’ve got the whole country focusing on just two people. And I think at the point, Adam would go in at a slight disadvantage. Danny is the safer option – he hasn’t taken as many risks. So I would put it at 55/45, Danny versus Adam. But one song could change everything. I thought David Archuleta walked the final last year. Sitting in that theater, judging the audience, if I had a million dollars to bet, it would all have gone on David Archuleta. We were literally gobsmacked that David Cook won.

Thanks, Sheryl! :)

  1. Very interesting Simon, but you are like the government and media, I don’t believe or trust you, lol. He knew who the winner was on finals night, when he apologized to Cook last year AFTER he re watched it later what a farce, AI has never been about the rewind and watch again, its always been the live moment… Simon just had to save face. And that is so unlike him to apologize, haha who is he trying to kid?

  3. Well, to me last year they meant to make DC to win. Simon tried to play his game: on one hand he came out to presses talked badly about DA on how he was not good at performing and get boring and stuff, driving people’s attention on voting for Cook. On the other hand, he praised him winner so hard on finals so his fans go too happy to vote for him at their best and drove Cook’s fans go vote crazily for him. So, winner already made before the finals.

  4. Kris Here are my weekly “American Idol” song choices for the contestants. I’m operating under the assumption that the theme is 70s-80s Rock and that the second song will be a duet, so we’re working through all possible extrapolations for that. Tell me what you think of my choices below!

The only previous frame of reference we have for this theme is last season’s Rock n Roll Hall of Fame week. In that week, we heard “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Proud Mary,” “Baba O’Reilly,” “A Change is Gonna Come,” two complete trainwrecks by Jason Castro and two cop-out schmaltzy ballads by David Archuleta (because that’s all he can freaking do). I hope our Top 4 does better with the theme this year.

Now, let’s be honest: this is Allison and Adam’s week. There is no reason why the two of them shouldn’t just KILL their songs. I’m hoping Danny will do another teeny-bopper karaoke song and somehow Kris can sneak into the Top 3, but I am not holding my breath. Also, I apologize for how many songs I chose for each singer. Rock from the 70s and 80s is my very favorite genre of music so it was tough narrowing it down.

David Archuleta can only sing ballads???
You are NOT very well informed.

The majority of what he did on Idol was schmoopy ballads. He’s an amazing singer, especially for his age, but his range is very limited.
    Andrea | May 4, 2009 1:24:54 PM | #

    I totally disagree!
His appeal is to audiences from 2 to 80 years old. I would say that his range and talent is so HUGE that “some” people just don’t “get him”.

i believe that allison will sing total eclipse of the heart. Their is a video in youtube where she participated on another tv show where she sings that song. However she didnt do that good of a job but now that she is 17 and her voice is stronger i bet that she will kill that song by a long shot.

That’s a good one, David! I didn’t even think of that.

    But what do I know? I don’t “get” David Archuleta. : )
    Andrea | May 4, 2009 7:26:08 PM | #

I believe David sang stand by me this week last year and totally blew away david cook during ROCK N ROLL week. LOL

and saying he can only do ballads is just dumb now that everyone knows that isn’t true. Crush was not a ballad.

“A very limited range”? The boy has the wider range than most of adult singers in the scene including top 40 artists. Only his youth and good looks got 7 major labels to compete to get him after idol, right? He is a fast rising new artist and quite becoming an international star.

It’s a hard week to choose since there are so many choices. Adam can do most anything and I’ll like it. I would love to hear Allison do Me and Bobby McGee.

As for the other two I don’t really care because I don’t like either of them.
    Sage | May 4, 2009 9:45:55 PM | #

I agree that Adam and Allison would be awesome. Let’s hope that’s what happens. Adam and Allison should be the final two, with Adam winning it all. I just don’t think that AI will allow it.
    Terri R. | May 5, 2009 5:44:54 AM | #

I think Adam & Allison is a bad idea. We need to see them in less comfortable situations like Adam & Danny (competing for the loudest scream) and Kris and Allison (competing for the cutest). We need to see them uncomfortable so we will know how they can handle it, not in a place where our “favorite” can shine. I want Adam to show how well he can sing when he isn’t ‘performing’ alone onstage. (Personally, I think he would do great, but I would like to see it to silence some critics.)

And Andrea, get over David Archuleta already. Why do you bring him up every week. We know you don’t like him but the unreasonable jealousy (or whatever it is that causes you to be so critical) is just plain weird and scary.
    Rick | May 5, 2009 6:10:17 AM | #

Oh give me a break- Andrea is not jealous. It’s not wierd or scary to bring him up when recapping last year’s show. What’s wierd is the obessed fan a few posts up. Andrea was simply pointing out that David A DID sing mainly ballads last year on AI and that WAS what his speciality was. Geez, people are allowed to dislike your precious David A. I think he’s got limited range as well. It’s an opinion that’s all.
    Jules | May 5, 2009 7:07:33 AM | #

Who doesn’t have a limited range? He is better than many many current singers out there. Besides, singing is not all about range. He has many vocal strengths that received praises from music professionals last year.
    Dan | May 5, 2009 7:59:51 AM | #

Well now times told us and will continue to show us what David Archuleta can or cannot do, at least now we all know what being claimed he can “only do ballads” was just the way the people did the show tried to impress Americans about the contestant, in this case was David Archuleta, and many people just took that surface and believed. I remember last year, the judges always (and mostly) praised him so much each time he did anything related to ballads and try to be so picky whenever he did something else. So as he was only 16-17, as talented as he was, he then tried to stick up more with what would please the judges. Now then we see after idol, his new songs prove he can do very wide range and can still always touch listeners’souls and hearts. Excuse me, I think the AI is a manipulated show, it is money business of the people who produce the show. So, they always to try to manipulate to make result that comes best to their $ pocket. In the case of last year, look, David Cook to them was some kind of product ready to sell (polished in performing and mature in age and voice) whereas David Archuleta was still a school kid (could he commit 100% for the $ machine like Cook?, NO), not so good at stage performing. Now after one year, look how much different it is just in this. I may even think now the producers are sitting questioning themselves if they made the right decision last year by trying so hard to push David Archuleta in disadvantage position haha: with their creation of spreading dislike comments about him to presses by judges and many other stuff. They will continue to question themselves for long time in the future, in my opinion. So, we should take in words then do our own judge, dont let the people making $ out of business, fool us.

Several of these choices are from the 60s (Janis Joplin, Some Velvet Morning, Girl from the North Country, Soul Man) so if they do stick to the 70s and 80s those would be out.
    Beth | May 5, 2009 8:21:08 AM | #

I am not jealous of David Archuleta. I want to fix him some cocoa, read him some Harry Potter and tuck him in.

I don’t mention him every week. But the fervor of his fans keeps making me think of that youtube video of the the tweens losing their minds and it makes me giggle.

  5. Doesn’t it just float your gizzard that so many bloggers still see David as the tongue-tied, motion-challenged, balladeer that he sometimes appeared to be on American Idol?

    How THEY see David:

    How WE see David:

  6. Whether or not Simon ‘really’ said what TV Guide posted, the fact is it was printed and the world is reading it. I personally think he did say it – staying consistent with his opinions from the Finale night Season 7. His apology to Cook the next night was TOTALLY out of character and unprecedented for Simon….very phony and a bit of ‘I’m gonna say this so as to save my face’ kind of statement. I agree with Lisa! Nevertheless, David Archuleta will always win my vote and his talent far exceeds Idol. I don’t mean to sound like a don’t appreciate AI for the platform David was able to shine on and launch his career. I’m actually happy, looking back, that he didn’t win the title. He’s free to grow and climb as an artist – and no doubt people, he’s climbing fast! :)

  7. Hey guys did u notice Ryan Seacrest likes DA more than DC? It occurred to me since AI7 after each performance, his talking about DA was very warm and you can feel it is from his true person, shown in his smiles too, while about DC mostly very polite. At some point I even caught him glancing at DC in a bit kind of “you are not so likable” when DC answered his question on “how do you think about the judges comments”. It attracted my attention again on their return on AI, Ryan hugged DA and shook DC’s hand instead. Well, I mean who would not like and love DA (except some exception people with too much of closed protectedly closed hearts) haha.

  9. I LOVE THIS ARTICLE!!

SHERYL WAS BESIDE HERSELF WHEN SHE CALLED ME FROM THE STORE WHERE SHE FOUND THIS “GEM” OF AN ARTICLE!! SHE COULD NOT WAIT TO SEND IT AND HAVE IT POSTED ON FAN SCENE FOR ALL US TO ENJOY.

LIKE SHERYL, I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THESE SAME WORDS FROM SIMON!! I KNEW THAT EVENTUALLY, SOME DAY IT WOULD HAPPEN AND BETTER YET IT’S ON BLACK AND WHITE — IN WRITING!!

NO, IT DOES NOT CHANGE ANYTHING NOR DO I WANT IT CHANGED BY ANY MEANS. WHATS DONE IS DONE!! DAVID IS WHERE HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE. WHERE THE LORD INTENDED FOR HIM TO BE AND HE IS APPRECIATIVE OF EVERYTHING THAT HAS COME HIS WAY. HE IS HAPPY, SATISFIED AND ENJOYING THIS JOURNEY WITH THE LOVE OF HIS FAMILY, FRIENDS AND ALL HIS DEVOTED FANS!!

YES RYAN LOVES, LOVES DAVID!! HIS SMILE WAS ALWAYS BIGGER AND BRIGHTER WHEN HE WAS AROUND DAVID AND ALWAYS FELT THE NEED TO BE CLOSE TO HIM. HONESTLY THOUGHT, DON’T WELL ALL FEEL THE SAME WAY? I KNOW I DO!!

  10. A winner of AI8 will be announced this month and people are still talking about David Archuleta. For a runner-up, David Archuleta’s star is shining so bright. AI is a reality show foremost and singing competition secondary.
