Dr. Scott McGavin Interview part 1

The above photograph became famous when David posted it on his MySpace blog back in October. Would you like to meet the man who David is talking about in his blog?
David was quoted as saying, “I also went to the dentist…. haha. It was ok though because I’m cavity free!”
Here’s part one of an amazing interview. Dr. Scott McGavin describes why he is passionate about Rising Star Outreach and how we, the fans, can help change the lives of children in India.
How do you know David Archuleta?
Jeff and I have been friends since early childhood. As we grew and had families of our own, we stayed in contact with each other even when the Archuleta’s were living in Florida. I only really got to know the kids when they moved back to Utah. I knew that David would someday be a star when, at 10 years old, I heard him sing in a karaoke club at a hotel we were staying at while on vacation together in Mexico. He was very reluctant to sing but when he opened his mouth the whole place was in awe of what came out. He was never allowed to leave my dental office as a very young boy without first singing for my staff and the other patients who were fortunate enough to be there at the time.
How did you first find out about Rising Star Outreach?
In July of 2007, there was an article in the local paper about Becky Douglas which detailed the story of how her personal tragedy compelled her to start Rising Star Outreach.
What inspired you to donate your time and talent to this project?
The day I read that article, I vowed that I would one day take my family and we would go to India and volunteer our help. It was many conversations and a full year later that Becky asked me if I would assemble the first team of dentists to go over and render dental care to the people who are being served by RSO.
How many dentists and family members are going?
We are hoping to take a team of 4 or 5 dentists along with some of their family members. Currently, I have enlisted the help of Dr. Steve Aste and Dr. John Vandenberghe. Each of them will be taking members of their immediate families. I will personally be taking my wife and 3 youngest kids. These are all very big hearted people and we will accomplish a whole lot of good while there. We hope to bring on another dentist or two. Our team could be comprised of as many as 20 people.
What do you think the fans of David Archuleta can do to contribute to this great and worthy cause?
Dentistry is very equipment and material intensive and these items are very expensive. Bottom line: We need money to buy the stuff that is needed to accomplish our goals. I will also make a solemn promise that every penny that is donated will be spent on what we say it will. There will be no wasted money; not one penny! Money donated above and beyond what is needed for dental equipment will be spent on some other projects that are vital to the maintenance and continuity of the RSO school facility.
Your decision to donate your time will change lives for generations, how does this make you feel?
Wow! Hard to answer this one. I have been on several of these humanitarian trips. One thing I have learned is that there are a ton of very good people out there who, in many cases, volunteer all of their time and talents to serving the underprivileged of the world. I am in awe of these people. These people are like rock stars to me. I have very much enjoyed being able to travel to other parts of the world and help people who are in great need. I don’t want people to think, however, that you have to travel to some 3rd world country to have a positive impact on the lives of those who are in need. There are plenty of opportunities to help right here at home. Please help with this great cause if you can and I look forward to giving a full accounting of what we were able to accomplish in India. Thank You! Love, Dr. Scott McGavin
